LOL, the Byzantine empire had trade with vikings, a vikings dream was to sell british/german/french slaves to Constantinople for gold. Ánd what makes Turkey special, the whole alliance is on high alert and pay a heavy price for this war, why are the turkish let go just like this. Are we an alliance or not?
Exactly… why are not following your Ally Turkey?
Just s reminder… neither the UK, nor NATO nor any nation of NATO is at war.
Joining a defensive alliance doesn’t oblige you to completely subjugate your foreign policy to another country.
Countries don’t have to dance to our tune since Suez.

Christ the UK couldn’t stand to stay in the EU and Turkey has to follow our foreign policy?

NATO is at a hybrid war with Russia, me thinks. No?

Germany has been selling electronic components to Russia that's used to build tanks and weapons
genuinely - who is that then ? I've not seen any missile tear-down but my assumption is you need a fair few multi-processor mips, along with the appropriate MEMS devices say for inertial guidance ... beyond the likes of Bosch I'd have thought.

( Apparently Ukraine supplies l70% of neon gas used for lasers in semiconductor manufacture - which could promote another semiconductor supply issue
https://www.autonews.com/manufactur...nvasion-could-trigger-second-microchip-crisis
laser could be used for blowing fuses or engraving semiconductors didn't know there use was that extensive, during photolithography, say )

thats exaclty whats happening right now, including economic total war. IMHO

Sanctions and supplying weapons != hybrid war, read the link. The NATO response here has been restricted to defensive aid, there is a Russian narrative that this is Russia vs NATO etc.. but NATO is simply responding to an invasion of a democratic state by supplying aid, supplying defensive weapons etc.. there is certainly no push for anyone to attack Russia itself but simply to equip Ukraine to defend itself.

This is worrying:

There were fears of a tactical nuke hitting Poland but the obvious risk of a NATO response and then the massive risk of escalation if that were to happen. Hitting Azerbaijan with a tactical nuke on the other hand has a lower risk for Russia... though the potential knock-on effect of NATO member Turkey going absolutely apoplectic over it.

IF Putin actually does want to use a nuke somewhere as a warning to NATO/show of force etc.. then Azerbaijan could be a target as it doesn't prompt an automatic NATO obligation to respond, annoyingly they have been the aggressor here too.

Obviously how NATO or Turkey react to an event like this brings its own risks.

God I hope not, I don't even know what it would mean, what would happen next and how the world would react, it's a terrifying prospect.
The longer this goes on, the more likely they could be used.

Using a nuke at all will infuriate Beijing and would force other countries who are currently tepid like India into an impossible position as there's simply no defending it.

Japan would almost certainly see it as a rationale to change their constitution to allow an offensive military again as well as building a nuclear deterrent, which would further aggravate matters with China.

If he drops a nuke, even a 24Kt, all hell would break loose. I for one would be scared to death. Also, what will he gain from this, enter the hall of fame of countries having drop nukes on civilians alongside USA?

To be fair, one of the main lessons from this war is that if you have nuclear weapons you can do whatever you want.

Which isn't ideal...

As an side, he said in his experience the farming community love Clarkson for what he's done for educating people about these constant gambles that farmers are making on climate change and geopolitics!
Gambles almost always underwritten by the tax payer.

Souring economic relations even further with their only 'ally' is hardly worth the immediate reprieve of losing face in Armenia.

Ah, sorry, think we have wires crossed here.

I was referring to the lesson of this russia/ ukraine war. If russia was conventional armed only, I think we would have seen other nations intervening in ukraine. As a nuclear power, russia gets a pass.

Putin is now the classic "man with nothing to lose", which is a little worrying...

Past 3hrs:
*Ukraine’s President Zelensky Repeats That There Are No Plans to Capture Crimea by Force.
If Ukraine were able to recapture Crimea that would give them a ton of leverage when negotiating a peace treaty with Russia as one of the reasons why Russia occupied Crimea in the first place was to secure it's naval base in the Black sea.

I think Ukraine had more or less written Crimea off ages ago to be honest, I'd expect Russia officially gets Crimea as part of any peace treaty that gets signed.

The best steal for Ukraine right now is probably lifting the siege of Mariupol, but I am not sure if they have the manpower/resources to extend that far whilst also facing troops elsewhere.
