Budget £3000 - £4000 - Laptop or Desktop? Spec Me?

So I've been weighing up a new build for a while.

I'm currently running a 5700XT / Ryzen 3700X build and while it does the job I've already got my name down for a Samsung G8 when they finally land its not going to be capable.

I've been considering going the laptop route, the 2022 M16 looks like a tasty bit of kit, but considering I'm going to need to run a G8 for gaming and a seperate G9 for productivity I'm worried its going to be under powered. Also the main appeal of the laptop was gaming on the move, and due to a change of jobs the likelyhood that I'll need to do a lot of business travel is significantly reduced.

So I'm now considering building a new desktop. Thinking for a similar budget I can go extremely high spec, 12900K, 3080Ti, DDR5, all the bells and whistles.

Is my thinking correct here that a 3080Ti Mobile won't cut it at 4k, is another desktop the way to go?

And then if so, given the budget constraints in the thread title... what would you spec out?

As always any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

I absolutely detest the mobile naming conventions from NV. The mobile 3080ti is actually closer to a 3070 than a 3080 because of its bus width of 256 bit. The desktop 3080 has 320 bit bus and that is the main reason it is so good at high resolutions.

Unless you need to be portable you are always better off having a desktop over a laptop. You are not constrained by tiny heatsinks and can have very powerful quiet PC.

With your budget there are no real limitations and you can get pretty much the very best. The main considerations you will have are to do with aesthetics so here is a white themed build to consider.

If i had 3 - 4K then i would wait for the next gen of cpu`s and gpu`s, time will soon pass if you forget it for a while

the next AMD cpu`s, the 6800X or whatever they call it.
and an nvidia 4080 Ti

If the driver for change is a 240hz 4k monitor then I would just sell the 5700XT, buy a RTX3090ti and save yourself a couple of grand. A rip off but best way of achieving that goal.

Your plan of buying a 3080ti is suboptimal IMO, you will be GPU limited in some scenarios. 3700X with RTX3090ti might even beat 12900k 3080ti for less money.

Fire in a 5800x or 5900x and that 3090ti and have a very top end rig for 3-4 years.

I would never go with a laptop or even an all-in-one pc (which is basically a laptop on a monitor stand).

If you want choices and flexibility in upgrades and changes you are better off with a spacious desktop.

I would also avoid the smaller form factors unless there is no way to accommodate the space as once again the smaller size usually has less capability/flexibility and comes at a more expensive price for the same setup in a standard or extended atx form-factor.

As to the spec above, yep - Ive always been an inel boi although i am compelled to say amd has some pretty impressive options as well and usually got either more bang for the money or less bucks for the same capability.
