Oh FFS - Speed Camera Phone App

But surely I can simply edit the video and speed it up a little?
as I suggested the GOP and motion vector structures that are part of the video hevc/mp4 encoding mean it is difficult to speed up footage by a plausible amount (2x might work) withut leaving forensic information disclosing what you had done ... (even for 24fps film stock converted for 50/60hz typical monitor refresh these often look naff)
you need advanced software to re-interpolate phone videos to be misleading on speed, so I don't see scope for ambiguity,

e: what happened to those google glasses or the microsoft version, so I could record my life looking at a monitor

For dangerous driving but this suggests you can use your phone to submit speeders. An uncalibrated device which cannot be used for evidential purposes in relation to speed.

It'll keep the curtain twitchers happy I guess

Doesn't need to be calibrated. Speed can be calculated very easily by measuring travel time between two fixed points. They probably couldn't issue a speeding fine but could certainly go for dangerous or careless driving.

inadmissable ?
if the pictures show car passing known objects at much faster than speed limit permits they're going down,
(remember vincent hannas bmw/cyclist accident in which we discussed cyclists irresponsible pavement speed, as shown on dashcam)

...
since I don't walk around with a smartphone glued in my hand though, and don't really want to, I may need to eat my principals for the better cause.
Is it possible the video has been edited before submission to remove frames, so as to make the speed seem faster?

If its possible (which of course it is) then the evidence can't be guaranteed.

At last.

I can stand on bridges and catch speeders.

Next they need to offer £2 per caught speeder as a finders fee.

I'd make an absolute killing.

I suspect they'd be up in arms if people were using an AI app to report cyclist's behaviour LOL.

The ironic thing is drivers are forever moaning about cyclists breaking the law behaving like their **** don’t stink yet many drivers break the law virtually every time they drive their car in some shape or form

This would be heaven for the idiots who beep at you when you overtake them - a safe overtake is a fast overtake. No one watches the speedo whilst overtaking (unless they wanna get distracted).

"What is the issue if you drive properly and don't speed?". On my way to work at 3am in the morning it's standard for cars in front to be going 40/50 in a 30. I do it as well (closer to 40). Perfectly safe. Speed limits should be variable and they SHOULD be contestable depending on conditions. Thinking otherwise it robotic behaviour.

Depending on the area don't agree with perfectly safe - 30, 40 limits are generally in built up areas and even at like 2-3am it isn't unusual to have the odd pedestrians to appear out of the dark with little warning or similar. I do a lot of driving at night and get a few coming up behind me at like 50 or even some well over 50 then get annoyed with me or overtake dangerously, as I'm doing around the speed limit.

Good, I'm sick and tired of people speeding in built up areas.

Something which annoys me a lot, my uncle who is a driving instructor says they are "one speed" people, how many come flying up behind me in 30s and 40s, even overtake me, but then once you get to the open road they just sit there at 40-50MPH and you leave them for dust, until the next built up area......... why so many people can't just drive according to the limit and conditions I don't know.

Because people have a comfortable speed to drive at and for those types that speed is between 40 and 50. 30 is painfully slow and over 50 they start grabbing the wheel hard in fear.

Or maybe they're saving fuel. I can tell you what I don't understand is people doing smack on 30 in a 30 at 3am on an open road (non built up), good visibility with clearly no one around. 40 is much more comfortable which is why I'm in favour of variable limits but the technology isn't there yet (would need AI reactive speed signs). But variable speed limits will always be the correct answer to safe driving and not the static "30mph" types we have.

You don't understand why people are adhering to the law

was thinking France had this too,
some Austrian roads have reduced speed limits at night time, not sure if that is for potential fatigue, or, just in response to night time accident stats from alcohol involvement, maybe uk should adopt that; alcohol detection interlock is still incoming on the EU list of vehicle regulations though.

The issue is that right now, many drivers are simply applying their own judgement and flouting the law. That sets a precedent for the rest. Don't know about you, but allowing Mr "I'm a total pratt" to apply their own judgement on what speed feels appropriate is simply anarchy on the roads.

In short, either we set the example of how to drive to the law, or we allow the roads to degenerate into an utter free for all.

Where I live all been made 20, I think that's a bit slow for all the roads but it is what is so I go about 20. The amount of people who seem to take this personally, and are basically pushing me along as I'm going 20 is ridiculous.
