Hey all.

I have just upgraded my GPU to a Gigabyte RX 6700XT and now I'd like to start thinking about CPU and Mobo and was looking for some advice and pointers.

Currently I have an ASRock Z170 Extreme4 mobo and an Intel i5 6600K with 16GB of Corsair Vengence DDR4 2133mhz of ram... I run 3 27" screens at 5760x1080 res... EVGA 750W psu

Just wondering what you guys might recommend?

I play agmes such as Assetto Corsa Competizione, No Man's Sky, Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen, RDR2 anad the like. AS well as internet use I do a bit of photo editing with Lightroom.

Appreciate your advice.

The more reasonable option would be a 5600 or 12400, which would be a big upgrade to a 6600K. But, your budget would stretch to a 5800X or 12700, especially if you held onto the RAM until you were ready for 32GB.

Cool thanks. What mobo to go with the 5800x? Oh and cooler?
2133mhz memory is slow for modern cpu ideally 3600mhz is what you want, 32gb can be had for £100.

12700 gonna cost around £320
5800x £300

Motherboard £150 - b660 for intel or b550 for Amd.

I’d suggest getting either the 12700k or 12600 with a £200 B660 MSI motherboard and 32gigs of the patriot viper steel 3600 at £99.

that’s a super solid upgrade and you will last you a good few years.

the 5800X isn’t as fast as the 12700K and basically the same price.

if you wanted to drop the price a little, get the 12600 or 12400.

12700k is £375, 5800x cam be had for under £300 retail or look around seen it for £230...
Getting a b550 or b660 is much of a muchness imo... B660 doesnt gibe you anything more except 2nd nvme slot is gen4 to gen3.... B550 boards tend to be cheaper though, if you looking at decent board that can tale a more powerful cpu down the line, though you wouldnt need to with a 5800x.

So is it purely a cost thing? If I went the 12700k route as against the 5800x as mentioned... What real world benefits would I see?

I did a quite look around and the 12700k, a MSI Mag B660 board and the Patriot Viper ram comes in at around £680. I've not looked but I guess the 5800x version would be somewhat cheaper.. Obviously I'll need to add a decent cooler to each setup as well

Really grateful for all your advice by the way

I don't think the real world benefits are massive, especially at the resolution you'll be gaming at.

But going with Intel does give you potential for a nice cpu upgrade with raptor lake.

With AMD yes you could always upgrade the cpu but any improvements in performance won't be as great going from say a 5800x to 5900x as they might be going from alder lake to raptor lake.

You might like to watch this:

I think it was published prior to the 5700X being a thing, so that will change the market too.

An interesting watch. Definitely swings me towards the 12700. Although I can see cooling is going to be a consideration as well.

I have got a huge case so no probs with a deecent cooler, but a water cooler would be nice, but again, adds to the cost!

Thanks for everyones input. Very grateful

Just be aware that most coolers will need a socket 1700 bracket which most dont come with even though they state compatabilty.

Morning all,

So, eventually got everything updated...

Went with....

i7 12700
MSI MAG B660 Tomahawk wifi DDR4 board
Arctic Freezer i35 cooler
Gigabyte AMD RX 6700 XT
Corsair CMW32GX4M2Z3600C18 2x16GB

So thanks for all the advice, very much appreciated!!

According to https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/54277387#MEMORY_KIT its far better than my previous setup!!
The memory is running at 2666mhz according to benchmark you need to change that yo 3600mhz in the bios via xmp profile.
