Audi S3 or A35 AMG

In my opinion, it would net you another dated Audi in comparison with the more modern Mercedes and BMW offerings.

I wouldn’t personally say it’s dated compared to the latest BMW systems, having spent time in and driven both.

Yes, the A3 is, but the 4/5 still feels very modern inside, and very premium.

Not sure I'd be keen on an S4/5 due to size. Whilst they may have the luxury it would seem wasted when there is only myself in it + my daughter.

A mid sized HH is what I'm being drawn too until someone can offer me something which would change my mind.

The S3 I wasn't aware had dated tech. I assumed it was all updated in their 2018 facelift models. It's put me off them now tbh.

A 2017 or later b9 S4 is hardly dated even compared to a 2022 version. Apart from a few cosmetic exterior and interior tweaks there isn't much different.
If a M135i is going to be your choice try and find one with adaptive suspension if you can..

This is the point, a 2022 one is basically the same as a 2016.

A 2016/17 car is excellent for what it is, but who really wants to spend 30 grand on a 2016 A4?

Megane Renaultsport Sport 300 is what you need! Sub £30K will get you a late 2020 early 2021 Phase 2 model designed by an ex F1 driver ;)

162mph top speed, 420NM, F1 designed semi-auto gearbox, massive F1 rear diffuser (generates insane downforce & runs approx 30% under the rear of the car) & UK b road cornering performance which is literally the most extreme of ANY currently available car (even a hypercar struggles to keep up as the Megane is optimised for cornering!).

Trophy-R Megane still holds the nurburgring record for a front wheel drive production car BTW :p

You forgot to change your account to the chap selling a Megane :D

Would not sell mine for triple the RRP mate ;) most of the reviewers talked about rubbish like cup holders & missed the things that mattered like cornering performance & handling on UK roads + driver engagement :p

Great car no doubt but unless your either driving on a track or driving like a penis it’s completely useless. At the end of the day your still driving a Renault and in most situations it’s no faster than anything else at 30mph.

Just one point on both these cars, a lot of these will have been on a prestige rental fleet, so basically ragged by chavs every weekend, i went around looking at a few last year with a friend, and theres lot of ropey dross on the market.

The A3/A35 and 135 are great fun to drive, the A4/5 doesnt come close. 135 would be my choice, as i prefer the styling. You wont goo wrong with either.

Who would indeed :D https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202112080336454?sort=price-asc&advertising-location=at_cars&radius=1500&include-delivery-option=on&make=Audi&postcode=tn354qy&onesearchad=New&onesearchad=Nearly New&onesearchad=Used&model=S4&page=1&percentVehiclePriceDeposit=true

The S4 has always managed to hold it's price ok..

You have a 2015 F10 right?
They were launched in 2010. Why did you buy a 2015 530d when you could have just got a 2010 530d? Same car

It's even better than that - I did have a 2010 530d before this one :D

But the answer to the question is that when I bought it, all the main competition were of the same generation. There was no superior and more modern alternative available to me and it was, in my opinion, the best car in its class. I wanted a year old car and there wasn't much other choice. Had the current E Class been easily available perhaps I'd have made a different decision, but it wasn't.

If you sit in an A35 or an M135i and then sit in an A4 even though the A35 and the M135i are from a class below, they feel fresher and less dated inside than the A4. I wouldn't normally compare between classes, but given the OP originally specifically asked for and wanted a car from the class below, it's difficult really to see what benefits the A4 would offer which would offset this.

Now, the one notable exception is the engine - the engine in the S4 is clearly better but he seems quite happy with the idea of a 4 cylinder turbo, so perhaps he isn't bothered. In fact, given he is happy with a 4 cylinder turbo, I'd suggest a 330i before an S4 - slower, yes, but a much better car.

Having gone from a 2016 A4 to a 2021 M235i GC I don't really feel there is much in it. Yes the quality is on par, as the the 'feel' of all the switchgear, and the technology in the BMW is, obviously, better. Though the BMW series 1 and 2 have lifted the interior bar for cars of that class above that of the current A3..

Your missing the point mate....get a test drive mate throw it around a tight corner at 30mph let me know how you felt about that ;)

You feel that a car from the class below is comparable in quality to your old A4, isnt that the point ie its not worth the money and things have moved on?

if you’re set on a small hatch, M135i every day.

However, this is S4/S5 money too, which would net you a more luxury car and a V6 rather than I4

I'd side with this. The M135i is by far the most entertaining. I had an A45 for 3 months and the best feature was the panoramic roof. The posterchild for point and squirt modern car syndrome.

There is nothing wrong with the current A4's interior, it was, in terms of quality, far in advanced of anything at that time, which is why it is still able to hold its own against newer vehicles. But BMW did up the bar in interior quality, across their newest range of cars compared to any competitor. If you compare the interior of the M135i/M235i with the same class of car, such as the awful one of the current A3, you'll see. There is a new A4 on it's way by the way and I expect that also to be improved.
However, as I own a 2021 M235i, if that class of car is desired, then I'd go for the M135i anyway but this issue of very high prices still remains for any pre-owned...
