We have an auto Hyundai Santa Fe as it is used for caravan tugging. My wife has a 45 min commute and the Santa Fe is very uneconomic around town.

Would a 2010 Yaris with a manual box and the 1.33 petrol engine be a sensible option for her to commute in? These are retailing for around £4K at 60-70K miles currently. What are the known issues? Alternatives? TIA.

Wouldn't a Nissan Leaf cost the same and be cheaper to run

It's a Yaris, provided it's been looked after it'll outlast the both of you :)
This all day long

Yaris are bomb proof. Every person i know who has one or had one in the past, say the exact same thing "It's pretty much bomb proof"

:D

I drive a relations 63 99bhp one regularly they've had no problems since new - gos well with 3up at 70, comfortable - does the 2010 have a economic 6 speed ?
if it were mine I might try non-xl tyres, more compliancy, and an aftermarket radio, if that's possible.

Had one with the 6 speed, think it was the facelift though, was a nice car to drive and not just for commuting. Plenty enough power and managed better economy than the Yaris 1.0 I had prior.

We had one for 3 years around 7-8 years ago and it was a decent car. The engines are very reliable and I recall it was chain driven so didn't require a cambelt change.

The sliding rear seats were useful as you could make the boot bigger if needed, or smaller if carrying rear seat passengers.

The only problem I had is that it was the only car I've ever owned where I could never get comfy in it. I'm only 6ft with a 32'' inside leg but it never felt like the seat went far back enough. The seats were also very flat and unsupportive.

We have one which is facelift, but the same engine with 6 speed (is it 5 speed pre facelift?). I can’t help but think your budget should stretch to a newer version, but perhaps I’m out of touch. I’d definitely try and get the facelift If you can.

I can only echo the other comments - completely dependable and never let us down in 6 years or so of our ownership. Some trims are also really well specified for a small car (ours has a glass roof). We also find it surprisingly practical.

If you end up getting a newer version its worth noting the Toyota 10 year warranty if you dealer service. I’m ashamed to say ours always goes to the dealer (9 years old) and we’ve had a really good experience. Some of the minor things which have needed repairing under warranty have flown through without any resistance. I had more arguments with warranty claims on a 2 year old BMW.

Running costs are barely anything - we have 60k miles on ours and it’s on the second set of tyres, second set of wipers, original brake pads have plenty of life left, easily 50mpg+. We honestly can’t fault it for a runabout.

The newest for up to £4K with a manual box and up to 70K miles is an 11 reg, so old shape. The price of cars is ridiculous atm.
Yeah got the same problem. Looking to downsize a car but what you can get for what would be a decent budget are half moon miles or absolute grot boxes. Very few decent cars going for sub £5k let alone closer to £4k

Also consider Honda Jazz (2008 shape) and Micra (bubble shaped one).

Both bombproof as well.

was driving friends 2013 1.3 yaris again yesterday, that ability of the fuel gauge not to move much is addictive - seemed stuck on F for 40 odd miles.

Clutch seems to have a short travel, low bite point, without symptoms of slippage, so stalled it several times which haven't done for years in any car,
I know the plugs were more expensive than a regular car when i ebayed them for owner (double spark was it) , whether clutches are , if that's the issue.
