Hi

Is it required that I have earthing from consumer unit to gas meter. Old house so never been done, service guy said about it once.
I'm guessing its a new reg, is it actually a law that I should have it done?

Yes, it's nothing new. X-bonding at the meter has been a rule for donkeys years.
Within 2ft (600mm) of the meter outlet (or property boundary if your meter is down the garden), clamped to the pipe issuing a proper clamp to bare metal, and before the first Tee/branch of the outlet pipework.

So if I didn’t bother doing it, is it actually a law that I need to do it, if it wasn’t done in the first place?

The house is 1930s and lived here for 40+ yrs and it’s only recently a boiler guy mentioned it and also the guy installing our smart meter.

They're just doing their job, to notify you of something that isn't right. Nothing is enforcing you to do anything.

Now if your gas supplier, gas operative or Cadent for example inspected the gas installation, and they deemed it unsafe for any reasons and then capped your supply. They would then most likely require it to be correct (ie including X-bonding) before any reconnection takes place.

Excellent info, this is what they have done then, just advising that it’s not been done. I will leave it, as it will be hard work getting the cable from CU to meter.

tbh we had a boiler replaced under a warm home scheme in 2012 and they fitted a earth wire at the time from the meter ,pinned to the side of the house and into the front porch and earth clamper to the main incoming sheathing. only noticed it when we just had our new boiler a few months ago fitted and the fitter said ohh its been bonded.
1930s house also.
