Moved my sons SSD into my old Asus X99-s pc and all is fine other than a raft of unknown devices in device manager ??

Yes tried the asus drivers from downloads. Some won't install and pointing 'update driver' to the downloaded and unzipped folders doesn't work. Tried windows update, nothing. PC working fine so far but one type of driverless device has 53 entries ! (first in the list below), the other have between one and four instances.

Base System Device (x53 !!)
PCI bus 255, device 30, function 0

I used to run the Intel Chipset INF Utility which was often bundled on the drivers CD. You may need an older version that supports the X99 chipset. Most of the entries will run OK but the inf util helps Windows to define the correct name in device manager which is why a system will work fine anyway.

Stubborn devices can be Googled using "SM Bus Controller" for example or the Device PCI string but you have top be a bit wary of downloading random files so try to cross reference against OEM drivers like Dell, HP, Lenovo etc.

Tried windows update optional updates? This usually picks up most of these kind of things.

Failing that then I always Google the hardware id and find the driver that way.

The optional option in windows update seems to suggest an assortment of outdated drivers just incase you have issues ?. Even shows them on my new motherboard where device manager is 100% happy. Yes googled a couple of them but nothing of use came back...

those first few are all intel chipset related. I would try to uninstall the intel drivers and reinstall them but if that doesnt work, the best way forward is probably to repair windows.

I had same issue long time ago with Linx 10 tablet and old laptops, downloaded and ran latest Intel chipset INF Utility found nothing but did not or refused to installed drivers, Windows Update found nothing so later I found a solution myself.

You will need to download latest Intel chipset INF Utility.

Then run setupchipset.exe and do not click on setup buttons.

Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Temp, look inside each folder to find which folder Intel chipset INF Utility extracted drivers. When you find the correct folder contained chipset drivers, copy and paste folder to desktop then you can cancel setupchipset.exe setup.

Open Device Manager and click on unknown devices and run update driver pointing to folder on desktop and it will locate the correct driver and the driver will update successfully.

Base System Device PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_6F98&SUBSYS_6F988086&REV_01\3&103a9d54&0&F0 is Intel(R) Xeon(R) E7 v4/Xeon(R) E5 v4/Xeon(R) E3 v4/Xeon(R) D/Core i7 Power Control Unit - 6F98

PCI Device PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D7C&SUBSYS_86001043&REV_05\3&11583659&0&88 is Intel(R) C610 series/X99 chipset SPSR - 8D7C

Performance Counters Device PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_6F37&SUBSYS_6F378086&REV_01\3&103a9d54&0&5A is Intel(R) Xeon(R) E7 v4/Xeon(R) E5 v4/Xeon(R) E3 v4/Xeon(R) D/Core i7 R3 QPI Link 0/1 - 6F37

SM Bus Controller Device PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D22&SUBSYS_86001043&REV_05\3&11583659&0&FB is Intel(R) C610 series/X99 chipset SMBus Controller - 8D22

System Interrupt Controller Device PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_6F2C&SUBSYS_00008086&REV_01\3&11583659&0&2C is Intel(R) Xeon(R) E7 v4/Xeon(R) E5 v4/Xeon(R) E3 v4/Xeon(R) D/Core i7 I/O APIC - 6F2C

Unknown Device Device ACPI\PNP0A0A\2&daba3ff&0 is AMDA00 Interface

You will need to download and install ASUS Probe II Sense software that will install AMDA00 Interface driver.

Doesn't work for us !, weirdly generates error "0x00004e24 This platform is not supported". The folder only contains two log files. Had previously tried 'Intel driver and support assistant' but was of no use.

Hmmm I downloaded it, opened File Explorer to monitoring C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Temp and ran the setup, clicked next to installed the drivers but noticed it did not extracted drivers to Intel folder. Old Intel Chipset INF Utility version able to extracted drivers after launched setup but the latest version on Intel website is no longer able to extract drivers. Strange there was no error after installed drivers, it supported Windows 10 and 11.

So there is other method to download Intel chipset drivers from Microsoft Update Catalog website. I checked each driver had matched hardwareID.

Sorted

Managed to get the AMDA00 driver off the ASUS CD but it found none of the others on there.

Looked at windows update again and noticed the 'optional updates - Driver updates' yet had initially steered clear of it as they seemed to be old drivers and the description was "one of these drivers might help, otherwise automatic updates will...". I thought what the hell and started installing some, the odd one failed but worked the second time. All clear now !, weird as most were "Intel - Other hardware - Intel Xeon....". You'd think the pc would struggle to work without these !?!?.

Then I look at the same on my new PC, MASSIVE yet similar list (mostly Intel Xeon and old drivers from 2016) there and yet device manager is clear and happy !. No wonder I avoided them on my sons pc.
