How late would you mow your lawn?

Wanting to gauge opinion here, my neighbour has quite a bit of land and maybe an acre and a half of that is grass and it feels like he's pretty much constantly mowing it.

He's got a John Deere ride on but will very regularly start mowing at 19:30 in the evening and go on till gone 21:00 or 21:30, we put my daughter to bed at 7 so while she isn't obviously annoyed by it i think it stops her getting to sleep as quickly as days when he's not out there mowing.

I was just out in the garden on our patio and heard him go over and it splutter into life so had to come inside as the noise is pretty overbearing and all the fumes are also very unpleasant.

Perhaps i'm spoiled as i've got a robot mower which is pretty much silent so i only need to make noise in the garden a couple of times a year to strim some edges but wanted to hear other peoples thoughts?

This being OcUK expect a load of replies saying he can do what he wants and you’re the one being unreasonable, and if you ever said anything to them about it they’d tell you to get lost or throttle you or something etc.

If he’s making a habit of it I think that’s pretty unreasonable. Nobody wants to come home from work, sit down on their patio for a nice evening and have to listen to that. It probably falls under the same noise rules as builders using heavily machinery etc so check your local councils website maybe?

I've mown the lawn at 8:30pm in June / July and I didn't think that it was unreasonable. We only have a small lawn though, so it only takes 10 minutes or so.

We do live in an urban environment though and we're near a pub , so there's other noise going on anyway. I can imagine if you're somewhere rural and it's the only noise you can hear, it might seem more intrusive.

I'm glad it's not just me that finds it annoying. Tends to be people that don't have young kids, as we put ours down around the same time. Infact as I write this I can here them going in the distance. They're all electric ones near me, but as it's so hot we have the windows wide open. Bit selfish imo.

I mow while it's light, in June I went out to mow the grass at 9:30, but it's a cordless electric mower and it only takes 40mins. Doing it during the week means I don't have to do it on the weekend.

Go and talk to him, if a neighbour raised it with me and had good reason, such as young children, I'd try to accommodate.

I have a ride on mower and I wouldn't cut the grass at that time of day although he may do it because it's the only time he can or he thinks it's better for the grass or something. Still not very neighbourly though.

If the fumes are as bad as you say it's probably because he hasn't serviced it in years or is using crap fuel, I know this!

I have a ride on mower and cant recall doing it that late at night. Fortunately, I don't have any neighbours near enough to concern that. As mentioned above go speak to the person, we used to have social skills and engage with folk once upon a time.

Only thing I can think of is he is picking up the grass after cutting so passes the same spots adding time to the job.

The house next door to me had three kids playing in their garden the other day. I swear I could have killed them for all the noise they were making and it went on for hours. The worst thing about it was I was just lowering myself into a nice hot bubble bath when it all started.

Kids should be allowed to play in the garden. Buy some headphones.

Funny I was going to post similar. The other day the neighbours kids (and 2 other kids) were screaming so much I had to turn the TV up quite significantly. It went on for 3 hours or so.
Parents (and I have been there) seem to mainly become immune to their own kids noise.

We have noise rules in the UK and cutting the lawn via whatever method is fine at the time the OP suggest his neighbour is doing it.

Sounds to me like the ideal time to suggest he gets an electric ride on mower if it bothers you that much.

Why would that be anymore acceptable than someone doing DIY, or playing music out, or dogs barking etc. Everyone will have their own opinion of what is bordering on nuisance noise.

Grass doesn't grow that quick, so if he's out every other night then he's not mowing it short enough. Our grass grows wild this time of the year to the point I'm doing a short cut at least once a week.

Because kids playing in a garden is normal everyday behaviour and if a neighbour doesn't like it they can easily block it out by shutting a window, moving to another room, putting the TV on, putting some headphones on etc etc.

Legally, he can mow it up until 11pm.

In terms of what is reasonable, in his perspective is as long as it's light out. Especially now, he is not going to do it in the middle of the day when it is 35c, he would wait until it's cooler in the evening, especially if he goes to work in the day.

In terms of what is reasonable to you, as a father of young kids...before your kid goes to sleep. Which obviously clashes with what is reasonable for him....may be if you offer to mow his lawn for him in the middle of the day? But he is legally can just say he can do, up until 11pm.

I would ask him nicely....but you understand why he is doing this in the evening.

I actually mow it last night around 8pm...

And a neighbour can do those exact same things for any DIY noise, music on outside, people talking, or dogs barking.

Fixed that for you

As stated we have noise laws and within reason as long as people comply then its fine.

We used to have a neighbour who I would swear would wait until we put the washing out to spark up his chimenea on a hot summers day.
Nothing we could do apart from suck up smoky washing or take it back inside.
