Morning all,

I'm currently running an itx setup which consists of a i7 3770, 16GB DDR4 and a 750ti that's being powered by a SFX Corsair 450w Platinum psu.

I'm looking to upgrade the gpu to a Palit StormX 3050, am I asking too much of the 450w psu here? I know Palit recommend a 550w but it seems a little excessive?

Morning all,

Honestly if it was me I'd be looking at a 650w for the psu. Yes you could likely run on less (not sure I'd trust 450w but calc's seem to say it will be ok....) but I like a little headroom and it will also allow it to run in the 'better efficiency' window of the psu.

Think I might give the upgrade a miss then, I can't justify the cost of an additional psu on top of an already relative expensive card (I know it's not that expensive in comparison to other gpus). PC gaming is too damn expensive now fml.

From what I can see looking at reviews, it would add another 60-70 watts (approximately 120-130 gaming average), but in igorslab's review the transients can reach up to 200 wats.

I don't know what a 3770 would use under typical gaming load, but I'd be very surprised if it was more than 100 watts (though might depend how overclocked it is, I guess).

If you could get a figure for the entire system from the wall, it would help say with more certainty, but I'd feel fairly confident a Corsair platinum PSU would have components capable of running at a high level of load.

@Tetras the 3770 is a non K version, so no overclocking has been done and I think you're right with the 100w guess.

@tamzzy & @mickyflinn thanks for the input. I had a feeling it would handle it, especially with it being the platinum version - I've seen power hungrier itx systems on reddit using a 450w Platinum but I thought I'd be better off asking :p

The 750ti is a bit long in the tooth now, it's served me well for playing COD4 but I'd really like to try some newer games.

surprised its lasted you that long
t'was an entry-level card when released...8 years ago now? lol

the 3050 would be a nice match for the 3770
it's performance is around the 980ti/1070

I'm not too surprised given that I I play a handful of older games and it's given me stable 250fps in COD4, 1080p at 27 inch so I can't complain at all! I won't even resell it, I might put it in a box frame and hang it on the wall :p

I think I may have a rethink on this though, I've just checked some benchmarks... I didn't realise they were so close in performance with quite old cards!

It's never easy is it!

Benchmarks look good and I've just looked at the gpu specs and sadly it's a no go because of the dimensions. I'm limited to about 195mm* - I'm really stuck between a rock and a hard place here :p

Performance at the midrange has stagnated for years, but the crypto boom didn't help. The 3050 has always been relatively poor value though, compared to FE drop cards or the RX 6600. Palit do a 170mm 3060 (stormx brand), I'd imagine you could get a 3050 the same size (edit: MSI Aero ITX says 172mm).

I'd like it to run on my current psu, do you reckon the 3060 stormx would?
170w power draw on the 3060 so it's possible but with 3000 series cards its power spikes to be aware of .

1660 super is about the same performance as a 3050
(radeon 6600 is about 30% faster than either)

a used 1660 super will be cheaper than either of the current gen cards

@Tetras, @tamzzy, @mickyflinn

Thanks all for your suggestions and input, it's all food for thought. Ill keep an eye out for MSRP to drop (further) on current gen cards / keep an eye out for used alternatives. I've waited this long, another few months isn't going to hurt!
