Morning all,

So this morning we woke up to 20p left on the smart meter and by the time we made a coffee and toast it has gone all the way down to 3p... Is this normal for this cost of living crisis or does this seem a lot for less than 5 mins electricity?

We are with a company called BOOSTso if anybody is with them it would be good to compare... We've now topped it up to £30 we shall see how long it lasts.

Cheers

17p is probably around 1/2 a kwh.
Kettle and toaster together are probably 4-5 kw, so if you ran them for 6-7 minutes, that would be close.

OK that makes sense, thank you... Thought I'd check to see what it costs nowadays as we've never really noticed...

Cheers @Haze my darling ;)

Kettles and toasters consume a lot of power for a short period of time 1 - 1.2KW for a 2 slot toaster and 1.5 - 2.5KW for a kettle . So sounds about right.

Crazy, glad we're only using a 2 slot one.. Thinking of filling a flask in the morning save boiling the kettle multiple times in a day, talk about budgeting
Yup it's mental isn't it.

And now roumors of energy prices going up 65% in October.......

Yeah it is mental you're right... Ohh really looks like I'll have to do overtime to afford Christmas this year with the kids

What's your unit price? If you're on a pre pay it'll probably be pretty high unfortunately.

Make sure you only boil the amount of water you actually need, some people will fill the whole kettle up which is a massive waste. You're best off just boiling the right amount each time as you'll not save anything by storing it in the flask.

it's worth just having an idea in your head about how much each appliance in your house draws, a toaster is around 1kw, the kettle around 3kw, microwave around 0.8kw etc and then remember that it's KW use over time which matters, if a kettle is high use but only on for 90 seconds it wont cost much, but the microwave on for 10 mins at 0.8 will cost a lot more etc.

This was mentioned on our company intranet type of site for how to save energy and one of the replies was "What happens when you boil water? I can't use the exact amount because it'll be less once it's boiled" God knows how many times they were planning on boiling the water before using it

Ha yeah, i'm sure they'd notice the 2ml difference that evaporated when they're drinking their coffee! It's things like that which make you realise there is very little hope if peoples level of understanding is that low.

We were boiling a kettle multiple times a day. Try as I might I could not train the family to only put in what they need... so I invested in one of these

Zero wastage...

I'm pretty sure I could use more than 20p of electricity in 5 minutes if I went round the house turning everything on.

I use the hot water from the La Specialista now, so I'm only boiling the water I'm using.

you can boil a kettle and still only boil as much as your using, most kettles have the markings inside for 1 cup 2 cups etc and advertise them self as fast boiling

If you are not in a pre-pay meter for a specific reason, you should get rid of it pronto. All it takes is a phone call.

Unnecessary having a pre pay meter means you are paying more for literally more hassle having to top it up.
