First Gaming Build

Morning everyone,

I'm after some assistance with my first gaming build (and my first build in general) please

I was thinking about buying a pre built, but all the articles/comments seem to suggest building your own is better, and I think it would be fun and challenging. It doesn't look as complicated as I first thought from watching videos, other than maybe installing the cooler and connecting all the correct cables in the correct place etc

I'm mainly looking to use it for gaming, Warzone, Cyberpunk, Hogwarts Legacy when out, and potentially some streaming

I'd like to obtain 120 FPS on 1080p, if I could also get this for 1440p too would be a bonus

I've been eying up the RTX 3060 TI

My budget would be about £1,100-£1,200 (don't mind going over slightly) but don't know how realistic this build is with my requirements, I'm a complete novice when it comes to PC Gaming, having only ever gamed on console

Any recommendations and tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,170.05 (includes delivery: £14.10)

windows not included - keys can be bought separately very cheaply

personally, i'd recommend a diy build

Here is an Intel build if you want more options.

It does come to a fair bit cheaper to do a DIY build and you then get to choose a good reliable psu and can also instal a decent heatsink. It is not too hard to build a PC so if you watch a few more vids and take your time I think you can do it.

Thanks for those builds all much appreciated!

What are the main offsets between Intel and AMD if any? This is the biggest thing I've been trying to get my head around

Both would perform very similarly at 1080p with a 3060ti level GPU, I would lean towards the 5700X as warzone likes 8 cores.

You are trying to build within a certain budget so you are not looking at the 5800X3D or 12700K. When looking at the best performance/£ it is very close , 12400F+ B660 vs 5700x+B550 are both great choices and would lead to a very good PC at comparable price points.

I would say the only real issue you have to think about with Ryzen being a little more picky with ram compatability. Look for Ryzen tuned ram or check the mobo you go for QVL list to make sure the DDR4 you go for is compatable. Intel is a lot less picky with DDR4, DDR5 does have issues with 4 sticks at very high speeds but that is not really what you are looking at.

AMD are having a press event on Aug 4th to showcase their new AM5 platform. It could be meh or it could be game changing so you may want to wait 3 days before pressing buy.

AM5 will last for years, unlike the stupid 18 month upgrade window i got with Comet Lake, and the same if you buy a 12400f right now. Couple of months wait and new-tech premium though?

Sure but the DDR5 only entry point is going to be a tough pill for new PC buyers to stomach.

AM5 will last several generations and probably be better value overall and hopefully, DDR5 will drop to reasonable prices by then (unlikely).

Mid range budget and an awkward time to be buying with AM5 coming in Autumn, looking at the store B550 stocks look like their being sold off to make room for AM5 as you can't find a dirt cheap B550 any longer.

Yeah i was thinking 2023 before going DDR5 next
build. About time Intel had a socket change lol .. LGA 1851 next time round, yippee!
90 quid for 16GB DDR5 which is good to see though?

Interesting reading the above so thank you

I'm in no real rush to purchase - I would like it all done prior to October when the new COD comes out mainly, but pricing it up now and reading different things gives me the chance to start prepping for it

Think I'm set going for a 3060 TI minimum and for Ryzen, based on everything I've read and watched up to now
