Range Rover Sport SVR

Had my non-SVR (RRS 4.4 V8) for 2 years, no faults or problems with it. Extended warranty for both years but never had to use it. I waft around in it mainly towing 2500kg on the motorway or driving up and down A roads with adaptive cruise on.

I'll be selling it shortly but will definitely look to get another LR in the future as the comfort and lack of road noise is perfect for long journeys.

I had an X5 before the RRS, apparently the most reliable SUV on the market but mine spent more time in BMW than it did at home :(

I might get one if I lived on a farm or actually required some off road capability. Otherwise they seem pointless to me. Literally hundreds of cars I would prefer for that money.

But then would be boring if we all liked the same stuff, some people just like vans. :)

But its the same engine as the BMW X5M and the Jaguar F-Pace isn't it? So you could have the same sound in a car which won;t keep breaking down, doesnt have quite the same awful image and is cheaper to boot?

It’s a JLR designed 5.0 V8 rather than the BMW 4.4.

Range Rover Sport is a high segment than the F Pace to be fair.

Jonny, heard of any issues with the tyres on the rrs hybrids? Had 4 blowouts on 2 vehicles. Both rears. Pirelli scorpions. Inspected the tyres myself and they're an absolute mess. Fronts too so changing them as a precaution. Damage is to the tread valleys and tread.

What age is your RR and why are selling if you don’t mind me asking?

Interesting mention of your X5, no brand is infallible then.

It's a 2017 Autobiography 4.4 SDV8. I've sold my track car and trailer so no longer need the RRS for towing and we're getting a fairly sizable EV for dog duties. It means I can get something hugely impractical as a weekend/road trip car :D

My X5 was an utter lemon; suspension, gearbox, coolant and brake issues. All covered under warranty but I prefer to be able to drive my car than phone to ask how it's doing.

For me, I went as far away from RR as I could and went to Jeep. a lot more for your money and I never thought I'd say this, a Crysler product is more reliable. I think for the cost of an RR, the problems and upkeep is just out of this world, they're really appallingly built. My mechanic of 10 years thinks they're appalling, and RAC and an AA guy I know think they're absolutely appalling as well.

Its's weird though as to look at them and to drive they're amazing SUV's... really are... but the cost of ownership now, is for the rich not the normal person imho because everyone you see second hand has cheap tyres, or cut corners or not serviced well etc...

Personally one of the most overated cars ever built, they've always been money pits and unreliable and for that alone... it's a no from me. Plus that SVR, I was surprised, I kept up with one from the lights from a standstill, I thought they were faster than my SRT8 but don't seem to be!

I love your generation Jeep (so much so that I recently bought a 5.7 one for my wife) but you can’t compare the SRT8 to a Range Rover. It’s so low at the front that you can’t really take it off road at all, whereas an SVR has a great 4x4 system and good ground clearance, particularly with the suspension in extended mode. The interior on the Jeep is also vastly inferior and the general driving experience is a lot less refined.

Reliability wise I only know two people apart from you who have one, but one of them had a transfer case failure and the other gearbox failure, neither of which I’ve experienced in any of the range rovers I’ve owned. Most of the horror stories seem to come from the diesel models or early 5.0 ones - I’ve never heard anything particularly bad about the SVR.

Like I said, I love the SRT8, but whenever I’ve had the opportunity to buy one I couldn’t make it stack up against a Range Rover for my usage.

You will always get outliers. But if you check reliability tests Range Rovers have always done poorly. I actually know 4 people now who have all had to have new axles in theirs. Thats a major job and now good.

Touch wood my X5 has been perfect so far.

In general, if you speak to people in the industry, RR has a much worse name than either BMW or Jaguar.

It wants to be for the price difference but I know what you mean. But I was respending to the guy who said it was worth buying the RR for the engine alone and the noise it makes. Was pointing out that you could get that engine and noise without spending RR money (until i found it the old ones werent using the BMW engine)

F pace is an interesting one, lighter than the SVR, looks ace and you get a lot more car than the F Type.

I saw the two Formula E drivers, Mitch Evans and Sam Bird leave Gaydon in theirs a couple of weeks ago.

Then of course the V8 Defenders are in strong demand with that 5.0 V8 too now its obvious new cars are going for the 4.4 NC10. I know that install very well into the new MLA platform :)

21 plate Jag F Pace SVR, under 15k miles from a franchised dealer is around £73k.

18 plate facelifted RRS SVR, same mileage, franchised dealer can be had around £81k. Not a huge amount in it.

Good post. Thread seems to be split in two camps. Those that say the reliability and off road prowess is terrible who don't own one, and those that disagree who do! :D
If they were really as bad as people make out they wouldn't sell any. They aren't exactly cheap.

You're assuming cars are only ever bought for their performance.

Don;t get me wrong they are a fantastic piece of kit but they do have a reliability and an image problem.

When they are working, they are fab. When they spend mroe time at he dealer than you driving it, not so much.

Was the same with the Aston martin vanquish. Superb car, reliability was awful. In 9 months ownership from new it spent 5 months with Aston martin for various faults.

This is the problem, 90% of people don't own them, they lease them so in the first 3 years, it's all warranty, then they come to the 2nd hand market and this is when things probably fall apart! People who lease cars don't ytreat them like they're own car, why would they, thus some will get threashed etc... so lease up, move onto next one so some of the owners won't get the problems that further down the line others and 2nd or 3rd or 4th owners will... this is the same for all cars, but a Toyota on it's 5th owner will still all work :-)

How much is a 2021 Range Rover because frankly the fact one 4 times the age is more expensive than an F Pace doesn't support your point at all.

What next, there isn't much in it between a Ferrari and a 3 Series because you can get a 1995 355 for the price of a new 3 series?

You’re being a bit silly, but true to form I guess. I was just saying for the price of the facelifted Jag, you can get a facelifted RRS for under 10k more. Whether that is appealing or not is down to the purchaser. But you knew that…
