I have owned a Ryzen 1700 since first release and very good it has been and still is. Since I retired I run little productivity software, Word being the most used office program. I play quite a bit of Civ type games and I was wondering if a processor bump to a 5500 (preferably as it is cheap) will add some performance? I don't mind dropping some cores, 8 to 6 but no less.

On the other hand would a GPU boost be better but again I do not want to spend much more than £100. Boring I know. I currently have a Radeon RX470, medium spec. I get about 60fps on Civ6.

I have a recent MSI x470 motherboard capable of either upgrade having scrapped the ASUS POS a while back. All options considered carefully, thanks.

I'd go with atleast a 5600 if your planning to upgrade as the half cache on the 5500 really hurts gaming performance.

maybe worth keeping your eye out in MM for some used deals rather than going new if you want to keep the costs down.

Another vote for 5600 here as well. Shop around and wait till they drop to the expected £150 mark and not the inflated £180+ price point they are currently sitting at. AM5 is hitting the shelves in Sept so there could be a lot of AM4 systems hitting the second hand market. If you can pick up a second hand 5600x or 5800x then go for it if its the right price.

Joxeonis correct and you do not want a low cache chip for Civ6 style games. Some games are almost entirely run in the cache.

I know you are not in the market for a 5800X3D but if you look at the Factorio results at 7.30 mark you will see just how much cache effects some games.

Here is a more comprehensive review.

Thankyou both for your good advice. I do not upgrade as often as I used to so expecting a few years from this one. The comparison with an Intel i3 is compelling, I shall aim for the 5600 sometime this year.

I'm wondering whether to bin my Noctua 140 cooler as well. It was not really needed for the 1700 as I did not overclock this one. It takes up a lot of case real estate.

the 5600(x) is a good call. and i'll add another +1 to that
with civ 6, fast cores will help with turn times
however your gpu will be the bottleneck, so you won't necessarily see improvements in FPS - if that is what you're after

i would definitely NOT bin your current cooler as it makes zero sense to do so
the cooler is already in the case and not causing any incompatibilities
you'd have to shell out for a new (smaller/lousier) cooler or a more expensive aio cooler, both of which will cost extra money for what gain exactly?

At current OCUK prices and since you play Civ type games I'd get the 5700X, but definitely not the 5500.

It is a good price, but I will stick around the £150 mark. My 1700 may bring a slight return , it cost £342 in 2017. :)

Senior moment. In retrospection my computer has been no noisier over the past few days than its usual quiet self. It's a keeper.

Don't forget to check you have a compatible motherboard bios installed for the new cpu before removing the existing one. If not you will need to update the bios.
