120mph on the M6, I’m presuming a ban? (Not for me!)

If he can't spot and brake for a fixed camera in time hes going too fast ;)

Have done over that a few times on the autobahn, once in the back of a E Class taxi which was entertaining but perfectly safe as everyone know the rules and expects it.

Wouldn't every do it in the UK though as other drivers don't expect you to be going nearly twice the limit, and the police only seem interested in catching speeders... Sure with a decent lawyer he'll get a slapped wrist and a tiny fine.

Gantry cameras are only active when the speed limit is posted. If it wasn't being managed at the time then nothing will happen.

Dear Mr Dean,

Freedom of Information request: reference 11165, first notified to us by email on 18th July 2019.

Thank you for your recent request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, as detailed below:

Can you confirm or deny that speed cameras on the M6 are active when there is no speed limit displayed on the gantry? In other words are they active for the national speed limit?

Derbyshire police have confirmed this is the case for a stretch of the M1, and I am curious if Staffordshire police have done the same.

If so can you release figures of how many vehicles have been caught by cameras when no speed limit has been displayed, and therefore been going over 70mph?

CLARIFICATION RECEIVED - 18/07/19

I mean the whole of the M6 that falls within the Staffordshire Police area and is smart motorway with variable speed limit and cameras on gantries.

This would be from J10a to J16 I imagine?

If a timeframe is needed for this query then the past 12 months will suffice.

Staffordshire Police’s response to your enquiry is as follows:

Staffordshire Police does hold the requested information.

Can you confirm or deny that speed cameras on the M6 are active when there is no speed limit displayed on the gantry? In other words are they active for the national speed limit?

Yes, the cameras are active.

This would be from J10a to J16 I imagine?

The Smart section of the M6 Motorway is between J10a-J13.

If so can you release figures of how many vehicles have been caught by cameras when no speed limit has been displayed, and therefore been going over 70mph? If a timeframe is needed for this query then the past 12 months will suffice.

Between 1st July 2018 to 30th June 2019 the number of Notice of Intended Prosecutions (NIP’s) issued for vehicle exceeding the National speed limit for this section of the M6 Motorway was 763.

No idea who Andrew Dean is, just found this as I believed your statement wrong, which it is.

Clean license, works for the NHS - management - and needs car for his job, I’m thinking automatic ban and plenty of points but, thought I’d ask the collective knowledge base here.

I'm sure he can find a trainee or someone similar to chauffeur him around.

Funnily enough, I once did that for real. The driveway was in France and it was leading to a chateau and therefore was of suitable length. Yes, I was young. And yes, I was stupid.
I know of someone who did 65mph on the Chunnel train when boarding.

I have seen big numbers on my driveway....but as it's adopted I must be mistaken and never more than 60mph..... Well it's only 1/2 mile long.

Dear Mr Dean,

The only thing with this it doesn't specify which cameras, it isn't specific.

There are the gantry ones and the ones on the left. The ones on the left are always active. I've personally never seen a gantry one flash, I'm not saying they don't work, I'm simply saying I've personally never seen one go.

The ones on the left plenty of times.

I thought anything over a ton was an automatic ban? Have to be a special type of moron to do that in the UK, especially if you need a licence for work, and with cameras everywhere.
There is not really any such thing as an "automatic ban" for speeding. It will go to court; anything from 6 points and a hefty fine through to a ban are distinct possibilities.

Grovelling in court would be a good start; I got 6 points for 104 on the motorway but that was a good few years ago now.

Hopefully he will wriggle out of it and learn that he had a lucky escape and that will be the end of his speeding days. We need all the NHS workers that we can right now

I'm almost certain the gantry points on the M6 are only active when they display the speed on them.

There are other "side mounted" cameras which are active all the time.
