120mph on the M6, I’m presuming a ban? (Not for me!)

Do you think this would have ever been a thing if people could stick to the speed limits in the first place? How many speed cameras do you think we would have on the roads if people didn't speed?

Good chance there would be zero cameras, but the facts are that pretty much everyone speeds to some degree, even those claiming they never speed, everyone has gone over the limit without realising from time to time because you cannot keep your eyes glued to the speedo or the car simply creeps over in certain gears/speeds/scenarios and your like oops I am little over let off.

Fact is the reason cameras have exploded because of the money they bring in, that is the real reason, they are a huge cash generator and is also why you see them in locations where they are clearly designed for cash generation and not safety.

While that may be true - as you say, if no-one sped then there almost certainly wouldn't be any cameras, as they wouldn't bring in any money. The people funding those cameras aren't the ones who drive within the limit 90% of the time but might go over by a few miles on a downhill stretch, or hit 80 for a few seconds when performing an overtake.

I'm surprised the police don't speed trap each end of the dual carriageway I use to get to work - there is a completely unnecessary delay at the start before the limited changes from 40 to NSL - so more than half the vehicles at any one time are doing 70+ before they enter the NSL, at the other end an abrupt change to a 30 limit - probably 2/3rds of drivers are doing well in excess of 40 into the limit.

The cops rarely pull anyone doing less than 85MPH though on that dual when they do speed checks.

Cameras were introduced at accident hot spots, assumptions were made on the causes instead of being statistically based - thus, cha-ching!

So yes, there would probably still be cameras even if everyone stuck to the speed limit as the causes were assumed.

Probably because the common sense of the cops is with the motorist, a 40mph limit on a dual carriage way is silly and most police understand and know modern cars can safely move along at 85mph, the speed limits are to low on motorways, the reason they stay as they are is because driving standards are really poor nowadays. Police don't just go over 70, book him, they will assess the driving standards and traffic conditions and in most cases probably see them as no risk as thus don't pull over. I am sure if they were doing 80mph weaving in and out, cutting people up they would soon pull them over.

If I was setting speed limits the motorway would be increased to 90-100mph in dry conditions, maintaining 60-70mph in poor weather conditions.

There's nothing more permanent than a temporary government measure.

Income Tax, for example, was introduced as a temporary measure in 1790 something to pay for the war against the French.
Stamp Duty, a temporary 4 year tax ...

So really a load of pointless stuff then.

Can you name a temporary government limit imposed in the last couple of decades that persists?

I mean sure we could scrap the "temporary" income tax, and simultaneously get rid of the modern lifestyle and go back to "houses" for the poor that were worse then sheds. I suspect you wouldn't be driving them either.

Feel free to come back in 20 years and say I told you so.

Lets not even start to get into the discussion of how utterly massive an impact it would have on the economy (would basically destroy it as we know it today). No government is going to ban cars in 20 years time, its frankly a daft assumption that applying more speed control limiting devices is somehow related to banning cars.
CT nut job level stuff frankly.

I didn't say cars. I said non-automated cars.

You should read his posts in the covid thread. Masks are all about population control etc.

90/100 is too high. But 70 a bit low in good conditions and bit high in poor conditions. 60/80 would be better I'd support that.

An improvement would certainly be welcomed, I will admit I do generally sit on the motorway around 85mph indicated in good weather and low traffic conditions and just slow down when passing the fixed cameras. Yes I am breaking the law but if get caught will take it on the chin and not that it makes it right but plenty go whizzing past still who are probably doing around 100, motorways tend to move faster than limits in place, especially the M6 TOLL, plenty on there moving along way beyond 100 and I've never seen an accident yet on the TOLL road but in fairness it always seems very quiet on there.

Considering people in the UK don't even know when they should have their lights on, I don't think having two speed limits for different conditions would work over here unfortunately.
