Spa-Francorchamps

When was the track built?

The original, triangle-shaped track was built in 1921, with designers Jules de Thier and Henri Langlois van Ophem using public roads between the towns of Francorchamps, Malmedy, and Stavelot to create an amazing 14.9km circuit taking in the forests and rolling hills of the beautiful Ardennes region. The track was redeveloped in 1979, and although the new circuit is only half the original's length, it’s still the longest on the current calendar at 7.004km.

When was its first Grand Prix?

Having hosted a non-championship Grand Prix as long ago as 1924, Belgium’s iconic circuit was one of just seven to be part of Formula 1’s maiden championship in 1950. That race was won by the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio, who led home an Alfa Romeo one-two ahead of team mate Nino Farina.

What’s the circuit like?

Spa is among Formula 1 drivers’ most loved tracks, with its mix of long straights and challenging fast corners allowing them to push their cars to the edge of their capabilities – if it’s dry, that is. The size of the track and the nature of Belgian weather means it can sometimes be raining on one part of the track and dry on another, meaning grip can vary from one corner to the next. Keep an eye on the thrilling Eau Rouge, arguably the most famous sequence of corners in the world, as the drivers flick left, right and then up the hill through Raidillon.

Its looking like it could be a bit wet on the long range.

1.1mm for Sat , 0.3mm for Sunday.

Hopefully thats nothing like last year, but Spa is very changeable.

Was it really a year ago, feels like one of those odd things from a decade or more.

Spa really needs a good one, F1 are itching to replace it with probably another god awful street circuit.

Let's face it, the WDC is decided really. Verstappen has an 80 point lead, there's no way anyone's getting lucky enough to beat him and so he is shortly to be a two times world champion.

Just saw the advert for this on Sky and it triggered my rage again at the sham this race was last year (in a year of shams!!) which eventually played a part in the drivers championship.

To be honest not much left to play for this season, Ferrari saw to that some time ago! Interesting to see how Merc do for the remainder of the season and if they can join the top 2 teams ready for next season.

Yeah. I guess Merc can just hope to annoy RB really. Annoying that they're most likely going to take points off Ferrari and hence help cement the WDC for MV.

Will we see any dramatic differences with the amended plank rules and Spa being a long high speed circuit?

I kinda hope so, only way the championship gets interesting is if RB get a big penalty from the updated rules, a Merc 1-2 for the rest of the year would spice things up, if only to see the Hamilton and Russell relationship sours at all...

Although aren't they now restricted to just the moving skid blocks rather than the plank deflection so less likely to change much?

We'll tell you at about 6PM on Sunday

Also that :p

Yeah Karen Horner's face looking much more like a slapped bottom than usual, hopefully :p

(I'm just being hopeful, but it would be great to see the RB lose all of it's straight line advantage at least for the racing)
Alcohol and flares banned from the circuit too. :D
Aren't they anyway? Mad if not.
