Having well-planned defensive positions makes defending more successful, but the attacker always has the advantage of knowing where/when/how to strike and if they have decent scouts/ELINT, they have a good idea of where the enemy defenders are and how they’re organised.I haven't read all of that, but defending is always easier than attacking, I would expect it not to be a total cake walk to re-take Kherson, Ukraine command would know that as well.
If they succeed though I think the result will be worth it, the troops can be distributed along a shorter front, and Kherson holds a great deal of importance to Russia strategically.
