Asus TUF OC RTX 3080 Low Usage?

Hi guys! A bit of advice if possible please :D

I have just got myself from OCUK a Asus TUF OC RTX 3080 12GB and a Corsair RM850x. An upgrade from my old 1080Ti (Best card ever!) and a RM750 PSU. I seem to be having an issue with low utilisation at 1440p. I currently game on a 4K TV in the living room, mainly shooters and sim racing.

Most games I have tried use 99/100% GPU at 4K, great stuff! So I would assume dropping to 1440p I would gain a few more FPS. But it seems most things I try at 1440p I get the same frames or lower than I did at 4K, but the GPU usage stays around 40%?

In both cases at 4k or 1440p it seems my CPU isn't going to be a bottleneck, sits around 40-50%. Temps for both CPU & GPU max out around 65-70*c while gaming. 8700K at 5Ghz should still be good for 1440p?

You can really notice it in games like iRacing where each lap is the same usage constantly per lap, at the same parts of the track. Warzone is also the same, but with usage spikes every so often.

Any help much appreciated! Spec list below:

i7-8700K 5.0Ghz Delided
Noctua NH-D15
Thermal Grizzly Thermals
Asus ROG Maximus X Hero
32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200Mhz CL16
Asus TUF OC RTX 3080 12GB (NEW!)
Samsung 860 EVO 250GB & 2TB
Corsair RM850x (NEW!)

To get the most out of the rtx series cards, you need to make them work, run all graphics at max, otherwise they wont perform well.

Rather than look at the CPU usage overall, try looking at individual core usage. You have a 6 core/12 thread CPU, it could be your overall usage shows headroom because the game is maxxing out a couple of cores only and the others are idle.

your cpu is a botleneck plain and simple, as your chip is being used to 100% your gpu is only around 80-85% utilisation at 1440p, if you switch to 4k the situation will swing the other way and your gpu will be used a lot more as well as the cpu, at 4k resolution there should be less than 5% between the gpu and cpu, in practice thats what you want really.

Said on Tom's hardware there is a big trend of 8700 - 9900 CPU's bottlenecking higher end cards but no one would have it, big defence force comes out and it must be something else! even on this forum people deny it, So it is whatever you want it to be, people here are mostly driven by attachment problems to things they buy and emotions rather than logic.

Well he said his cpu sits around 40-50%, no way that is bottleneck surely ?

depends what setings are being used in game, that and resolution all play a part, plus the game being played too, if its not well optimised that hardware simply wont be used to its full potential

Ok, i have seen time and time again on forums thou, to get the gpu working well, is to make sure the gpu is working hard, so set graphics to there highest settings, as running these cards on low/med settings will not make the gpu work well.

It depends on the game/settings: at 5 Ghz a 8700K or 9900K with fast RAM can keep pace with a modern i5/Ryzen 5, certainly at higher resolutions and I don't think anyone would argue a 12400/5600 bottleneck a 3080, but if we take an i7-8700, it has an all-core boost of 4.3 Ghz, which is not ideal, since even an i3-12100 can beat it consistently at that clock.

Thanks for all the replies guys, very much appreciated!

It seems the performance is pretty much the same at 1440p or 4k, if anything slightly better at 4k. My CPU usage is maxing out at 40-50% overall, apparently!

Though all that being said, all the above which has been advised by you guys does make sense. I have now noticed that 1 or 2 cores will hit 80-90% usage. So if the game isn't optimised to use more cores, there is my issue it seems?

I would assume it's not worth trying to get a used 9900k? Not much performance increase since my 8700k is happy all cores 5Ghz?

yes i was thinking that too, you have all the 'what is it'. Cuda cores used for ray tracing..if they're not using it then the usage goes down.

I'm sure i played a non-rt,lower spec game and it wasn't anywhere near 100%.

Yeh it is a fact actually, a lot about it out on the web, a lot of people get way more fps running on high graphics settings, than on low settings, and like you say, it makes sense anyway.

Thanks for the all the help guys!

I have bumped my res back up to 4k and turned some things up for next to no performance hit. Seems as you say, gota work the card more!

CPU & Motherboard upgrade in the future is on the cards I reckon.
