Combating energy prices

So yesterday marked the day when all 25 sheets of Celotex were used up (bar some odds and sods) Obviously battened and insulted the internal walls of 4 bedrooms as discussed earlier in the thread and then the leftovers (6 sheets iirc) went up in the loft to replace any wool under the boarded centre section and the wool had been compacted to fit in the 100mm void. So this should be roughly 2.5 times more insulating looking at the comparable u values and taking into account the compacted wool.

As only one half of my loft had been boarded I used the opportunity to finish the other half and go right up to the gables with the celotex, so have also given myself another chunk of loft space, probably won't shove much more up there but means getting the christmas decs down once a year will be a darn sight easier! Will be keeping an eye on condensation over the winter as some of the wool is maybe 600mm deep where I've laid whatever was left on top of each other and I've heard this can cause issues, but the majority is now 350mm-400mm except in the eaves where i've kept an air gap.
I've just done my whole loft with 140mm celotex and boarded over it so got loads of storage space now. Wondering if well notice the difference over winter.

I forgot about our Mini Sky box, Sonos Beam and Frame TV that all radiate heat on standby. Seem to have knocked another 50W or so off our energy use. Rarely use them either. Easy enough to switch on at the wall during their rare moments of use. I think that’s the last of what I can do, curious to see what the smart meter says after lights out tonight.

Well that’s the lowest I’ve gotten our minimum draw down to. Happy with that.

At this point I reckon I’ve cut our electricity usage by over half, probably closer to 2/3. I await our next bill :)

For reference gas/electricity has been costing us around £140 month averaged across the year. The smart meter currently says a lot less than that for the last 30 days, despite our new tariff having kicked in.

Boiling 1 cup of water.. Options?

Is there anything better than a kettle for boiling 1 cup of tea?

My kettle is on its last legs and most of the work is boiling 1 cup.

Replace with kettle or new toy?

You’d need to boil an awful lot of water for that to make any sense.

Just get a kettle, a decent one will happy do one cup minimum.

Had a look at those one cups.
Some of the reviews say they boil a set amount and sometimes it's not enough!

Think I will stick with a kettle for this one. Thought was worth an ask though

Might even get a smart plug so can pre boil from upstairs! :D

I generally use my been to cup machine for boiling water that can be programmed for the amount. It's not quiet boiling which just also save some money.
