Reading some interesting comments by Russian commentators who claim this has "been" Putin's plan all along - that Putin likes to have the image of "following the will of the people" and so has engineered a situation where everyday Russians are waking up to the idea that Russia is under threat from the West, with events of the last couple of days as a catalyst and will start to demand of Putin that he does what is necessary to produce a decisive victory for Russia.

There is a more serious aspect to that though that Russia has been for some time approaching a crossroads where their options might be either falling back, attempting negotiations where they make significant concessions to Ukraine or going all in.

I doubt it was his plan, he probably thought it would be a walkover, and if most of the world hadn't piled in on Ukraines side he would have been in a better place now.
He has hugely miscalculated imo, and the west has taken full advantage of that.

Indeed. Is it not generally accepted that Putin originally planned to roll into the rest of Ukraine and install a puppet government? Anything else seems to just be revisionism.

Reality played out differently because Ukraine didn't fold as expected and instead put up stiff resistance with growing support and weapons from the west. Whilst Russian forces seemed hampered by their own corruption and incompetence. It isn't over yet, but from my armchair it very much looks as though Russian forces are currently reacting to Ukraine, rather than successfully pursuing their own strategy.

I wonder what Russias next move will be? Pull everything back to the Donbas (where I assume they have more support) and just try and hold that, whilst pretending that was the plan all along?
I'm guessing Zelensky will want that back as well...

The sensible thing for Russia to do would be try for a cease fire on the most favourable terms possible while they have ground to bagain with.

Russia has lost so much in this conflict; people, hardware, reputation, economic and just seem to have gained some damaged ground.

Countries don't always take the sensible option - the UK didn't make terms after the fall of France, even though there seemed to be no chance of removing the Germans. Germany and Japan kept fighting for years after it was clear to all that they had lost.

Zelensky has already said they wouldn't have a ceasefire unless Russia withdraws it's troops.

Don't blame him, Russia would just talk about a ceasefire but use it to buy time otherwise.

Their hold on the South Coast is looking very vulnerable right now. The more they pull back and concentrate their forces the more vulnerable they are to HIMARS and long range artillery. As the front shrinks this plays in Ukranian favour I'd of thought as Russia was playing to its strengths (large amount of artillery spread across a broad front) previously.

I really can't see Putin asking for a ceasefire, he will be desperately trying to save face.

I've seen some high quality copium in my time, but that is top tier stuff.

LOL they say the russians moved back to regroup
Russia's Defence Ministry has today conceded its own forces have moved back in what it described as an effort to "regroup". Quoted by Russian news agency TASS, the defence ministry said: "To achieve the stated goals of the Special Military Operation for the liberation of Donbas, it was decided to regroup the Russian troops located in the districts of Balakliia and Izium for the purpose of increasing efforts in the Donetsk direction."

If the Russians had just kept to the Donbas region this all probably wouldn't have happened. Putin already give ethnic Russians there Russian passports before all this started.

I read one post claiming that it was local Russian commanders on the ground that, seeing the situation, ordered a full retreat to try and save as many soldiers as they could going against orders from higher up the chain.

No matter how much the Kremlin wants it to be true there is no such thing as an ethnic Russian and shouldn't be given credibility over such a ridiculous false justification to invade neighbours.

Twitter had a video of many abandoned Russian tanks soo that's good (I refreshed the page and not can't find it but assuming its up to date info). I must admit I'm not really following everything, hard to keep up, but its not over by any stretch, still interesting to see how badly equipped the Russia army is. At this point its just embarrassing for Putin. Putin and the Russian army have done some pretty terrible things at this point, even if it all stopped tomorrow they would still need to answer for those crimes.

This guy has been crapping on Ukraine and it's military for months yet claims his channel is meant to be unbiased and tells the viewers what the media isn't saying. This was his last video from 8 days ago claiming the Kherson offensive has fallen flat and the Ukrainian's has suffered a 30% causality rate but has to use Russian sources to make that claim.

Checking the latest comments instead of the usual pro Russian BS that people/bots post on his channel the guy's BS is finally getting called out. Also he hasn't posted a new video for over a week now.

Annoyingly I bet Youtube starts putting his crap in my feed going forwards.

I know it's probably going to happen regardless and that we're just being 'reluctant' per the information war, but maybe a path has opened up on MBT's for Ukraine with this successful operation? Not sure they really need it if the material left behind is close to accurate, but I doubt Ukraine can sustain itself on these machines forever.

In youtube you can delete the channels you don't want to see in your side bar thing, and then say not interested in the channel.

Should stop the algorithm giving you more of it.
