A sunnier or damper area than Ron-ski....
Hi all,

We've just had a new roof installed, so we've moved the ugly wall mounted fan vents and fitted these inline roof tile ones.

Now I've just got the simple task of fitting a flexible ducting hose onto this and fitting the other side to the bathroom vent.... or so I thought...!

Am I being a dimwit or am I missing something? The ducting seems to be 100mm exactly and the bit it fits onto seems to be 100mm exactly, so it doesn't fit!?

The flexible ducting has a metal wire within, so it doesn't 'stretch' to fit or anything.

Can anyone help me - I feel pretty stupid as it's such a simple task, but I can't figure out how to solve this!!

Depending on the ducting grill that's mounted in the ceiling, there's an internal sleeve that can be extended out which just that bit smaller for the flexible ducting to attach to. Other than that, use a bit of dish soap or other to help force the ducting on!

Tile vents normally are fitted with a different type of ducting that goes on with a jubilee clip.

Saying that you won't need to replace the one you have, just tape it up to the tile vent with duct tape and make sure you don't have any sags that will create standing water in the pipe

There is a crude joke nestled somewhere here... But yes this is a definite man job and something we (if lucky) need to do often.

Just fashion a makeshift connection with duct tape. Or replace the lot with rigid tubing if you want to do it properly.

Heheh, yes indeed I've already had all this from the husband.... but I must say he's struggling with the fit also!

I dread to feed the innuendo-monsters here, but thank you for the suggestion, I will try lubricating it....

Yes I did read this when googling, it's a bit of a fiddly route as it goes in front of a hatch to get into the eaves. I can't quite work out the route it needs to take.

What would be the right ducting stuff for this if I went with rigid stuff?

So the flexible tube doesn't go 'over' the other bit? You just sort of bodge them together with duct tape, that can't be right can it?

It's not perfect no but the ducting you have is not compatible with the tile vent that has been used. You can either get a more suitable pipe and replace the one you have or a more suitable tile vent

Ah right, I feel a 3d print job coming on.....!

Maybe if I just made a male to male coupler or something then that'll join them?

What's the correct stuff that I should use? I measured it and it was 100mm and bought 100mm ducting, is there like 102mm ducting or something??

Pretty sure I did the same thing and with a bit of hassle got it to stretch over. Try slipping the duct over the vent at the bottom and use your two thumbs to hold it in place, then use your second/third/fourth fingers to sort of squeeze the plastic of the vent in whilst using your two first fingers to push the ring at the top onto the vent work it down to the bottom.

Or maybe just some of the metal rings at the end so it expands and slips over

Hmm interesting - ok, I'll give this a go too.

Plumbing is soooo daft and outdated - surely they could make it all like usb sockets....

I made a similar post about waste pipes the other week. Seems they made up the dimensions and what's advertised isn't actually what the dimension is.

No because then people would fit it the wrong way around half the time, curse of USB.

Doesn't fit USB socket, flip it over, still doesn't fit. Flip it once more, magically fits now!
Yes, but then they could release Ducting-C and we'd all be excitedly replacing all our old ducting... at least they could put colour changing LEDs on it.... ;)
