Does anyone have any recommendations. I once drilled through a live wire at work many years ago and have since had a lot of paranoia when it comes to drilling.

I'm about to move into my new home having been renting hence home improvements will be part of the course!!

Does anyone have any first hand experience with using the Bosch Truvo Digital Wall Detector?

I want pipes, wires, studs to all be detected so when it comes to putting up shelving, fixing wardrobes, shelves etc to the wall, I'm not going to inadvertently blow a hole in the wall!!

Thanks

yeap same situation, thought the bosch looked good but to be honest maybe im using it wrong (doubt it) but it now spends more time in the box. seems to struggle to find battens picks up electrics where they dont exist etc.
best was going through the set up finding the centre of a batten and drilling into thin air. i even opened a hole up (scrap piece of wall and looked inside and the batten was 18 inches +away hmmm.

the daughter has a cheap one and its the same. all pretty hit and miss. and yes i took all metal work off not that i wear much and used my other hand on the wall went through all the procedures, maybe i got a dud ? i would suggest trying one from screwfix , at least you can take it back if not happy :)

I've used the Truvo and it works fine, its never going to find wooden battens in walls as it doesn't detect wood but it works fine with metal studs, screws, pipes, wires etc.

I have a Zircon multiscanner, forget exactly which model but it finds studs to the centre point, detects metal and warns of AC cables etc
It's a bit flaky over a dot and dab wall, but I'll still use it to check where the foil wrapped pipes and cables are. Works great on all the internal timber frame walls and even though I have many photos during construction before plasterboard went up I still use it to confirm before drilling.

I thought they worked by capacitance and some other wizardy to tell you if there was a void. The one I've got has a setting for different thickness of plasterboard, but I'm tempted to try it on my chipboard floors (for piping). It always picks up ac, but iirc it's meant to pick it up with 45cm, so a decent distance away.

You can use little neodymium magnets to find the plasterboard/drywall screws and give you a nice visual reference of where the studs are.

When drilling I use an old, blunt masonry bit which makes it harder to do any serious damage should I hit anything.
