Upgrade advise: Old System

It's been many years since I gave my computer a good upgrade due to the whole, replacing Mobo means replacing CPU, RAM etc

I have currently have the following build:

Windows 10 OS
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz, 3501 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
BaseBoard Product MAXIMUS VI HERO
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 32.0 GB DDR3
Radeon RX 570 Series
1 x SSD 240 Crucial Drive (Flakey)
4 x Standard Hard drives varying in size

I have four monitors for work and have all the extras like keyboard, mouse etc

Predominately I use my device for work, semi technical stuff, but have it as my Media Streamers for films/tv through Plex as well

Happy to reuse things like graphics card as I am not into PC gaming anymore.

I need to keep it under £1000 as much as possible. Anything I have above £500 I will need to hide from the boss :P

Are any of your apps slow or not performing well? Do you need 32gigs of RAM? Will your apps make use of Nvidia Cuda cores? how good is your current chassis? How new is your current PSU?

Do you actually need a new PC or are you just wanting an upgrade is what I'm getting at.

The mobo is dodgy I believe. Keep getting crashes, losing drives, etc

Chassis probably could do with a change, its served me well but some of the front USBs are broken.

Its probably more like a new one with all the bits I have to remove.

OK. There are new Intel and AMD platforms coming out very soon but I don't think you're their target market and a well priced current gen might suit you just fine.

Eg the new AMD motherboards start at $290 which eats up a lot of budget before we get anywhere else with the build.

I could suggest that you get DDR5 but that pushes the price up quite sharply, unless you get cheap DDR5 but that's 16gigs and you probably need more?

aaaah. That makes sense. I upgraded to an 8 core 16 thread CPU because I found myself using more and more VMs.

Your use case for lots of RAM is therefor justified.

Given this, i've upgrade your CPU to an 12700KF as it has the extra cores you might need. Changed PSU as you don't need 650 watts and it comes with a better warranty

A DDR5 option that would give you a future capacity of 64gigs if you needed it.

The huge advantage of DDR5 is it's ability scale capacity quite quickly. I also like that it's only a little bit more expensive than the DDR4 option.

Here, this video really highlights the price to performance of current tech versus the up comming AM5.

Cheapest AM5 motherboard from MSI is $290 so it doesn't make sense for your use case.

If the UHD 770 is enough for your VMs & Plex, I'd consider dropping the 570 and buying a non-F CPU. The reason I say that is some 570/580s had pretty high idle power draw, especially with multi-monitor setups (you could check with GPU-Z, or in the newer drivers). That said, even though UHD 770 can support 4 screens, I'm not sure how many boards have 3, let alone 4 outputs. The Kontron K3843-B has 4 DPs, but that's not common, heh.
