From the BBC:

Following Vladimir Putin’s announcement earlier of a call-up for thousands of extra troops to fight in Ukraine, rumours have been circulating online that people are fleeing Russia and crossing the border to neighbouring Finland.

A Twitter post

that purports to show a border queue stretching “over 35km” (16 miles) has been liked and retweeted many thousands of times.

However, the video embedded in the tweet was originally posted two days ago on a TikTok account and is unconnected with Mr Putin’s speech.

Such has been the attention caused by the tweet that a senior official from the Finnish border authority, Matti Pitkäniitty, has posted his own tweet

denying there is anything abnormal about the situation at the border.

Putin is trying to push russians into boardering countries… followed by troubles and the putin decides to have another special operation to save all the russians being treated by the finnish nazis..

All too predictable.

I suspect turkey (and all the non-visa countries boardering russia) will have the same special operation planned..

Meanwhile in mother russia those that remain are more physiologically aligned to putin’s goal.. making it easier to control the population and weed out trouble makers.

Russia vs Turkey would be an interesting one... nuclear weapons aside the way things have gone so far Turkey would annihilate them 1 on 1.

What are you on about? You think after how this has gone vs a relatively weak opponent Putin is going after another country? Not a chance. This is just a unintended consequence of a man who thought everyone was going to jump at the chance to fight for the Motherland.

Completely agree with Liz Truss's speech at the UN, at least that's something. Although it sounded like she didn't write it and is just now reading the autocue/notes for the first time lol christ I'm not sure how long she'll be in a job for.

This whole thing has totally backfired on Putin and is only getting worse, making him and Russia look worse. The problem is, would he rather go all out and use nukes than just step back? This is going to have long-term implications as a big reminder that we can't have dictator counties have nukes and whole world held to ransom because they feel like it. His intolerance will not be tolerated.

That’s just it really. You cannot have a world with people like Putin in it. It would just leave the door open for others to follow suit. He has to be removed, one way or another.

What is reality and what is a dictator’s unicorn rainbow dream, are two separate things!
Putin has ambition.. even if that means falling flat on his face. Assuming he doesn’t fall flat on his face out of an open hospital window.

Doubtful.

Putin is struggling with the current special operation and is trying to appease the hardline nationalist elements with this mobilisation he likely didn't initially want to carry out, note in his speech he's framed it as "agreeing" with the defence dept of the need for it.

Russian troops are demoralised at the moment and have been fighting for months, realistically this mobilisation likely just allows for them to relieve units at the front and attempt to hold the areas they've taken over winter.

The other impact of it that I think a lot of commentators have perhaps missed is that it gives Putin some troops to put down potential unrest, attempts at a civil war/Balkanisation. He's tried the mobilisation but if Russia suffers further significant losses (quite plausible) he'll start making scapegoats out of people in the military. A big defeat could lead to internal power struggles, some regional politicians seeking to break away from Russia etc.. and currently they don't have the manpower to deal with it - with mobilisation they perhaps do if/when Chechnya or some republics in Siberia decide to get ideas re: independence.

I think people are far too quick to dismiss what Putin is saying nuclear wise as a bluff/empty words - a lot of what has underpinned this war seems to be Putin finally losing patience with what he sees as the world not taking him seriously - a lot of his final meetings with Macron, etc. contrary to how many seem to see those personally I believe he entertained them to satisfy and reinforce his thinking that nothing was going to change how he wanted it to unless he took action himself.

Putin seems to be one of those people of the mentality of "if I can't have it neither can anyone else" - backed into a corner he'll likely be destructive.

Personally I find the whole situation puzzling though - Putin historically hasn't been one to extend himself in this way, it seems to be an uncharacteristic huge miscalculation he is now doubling down on (ultimately even the most careful can make mistakes but I find it odd).

Why would they release the Azov heroes? Huge morale boost for Ukraine.

Possibly so the front page news is about them and not Russian failings... but it is quite odd - suggests not everyone in Russia is on the same page maybe though I can't imagine it wasn't authorised from the top.
