I've talked about this conflict at great lengths with friends and colleagues, behind the chat and banter there is a genuine concern that we are teetering on the precipice of the next great war.

To an extent maybe, WW1 and WW2 were melting pots ready to blow.

This time, it appears that Russia is trying to escalate things but the appetite to follow suit isn't there, so they just keep on going forward, alone, and more isolated each day.

That is why we can only react to whatever insane moves they do next, we can't prevent them doing stupid things, but we can be ready to show them the consequences of it.

I wonder if they were hoping to spark the China/Taiwan situation early as well, that would more properly test resolves. China seems to have other issues right now though.

There is dissatisfaction with the Western centric ordering of the world brewing up, generally too fragmented to come to much unless the big countries like Russia and China acted in unison. Frustration with it seems to be a significant factor in why Putin has gone off now - but China seems less eager to follow, probably because of how tied to the West their economy is.

If Russia gained much traction it would make it much more likely for conflicts to open up and spill out though - Putin has been rallying around for support but at least at face value most have told him to do one directly even if they might support him more behind the scenes - even NK have backed off.

At the moment it's mostly just Russia sat there banging the drums of war, and wondering why they're being ostracised and criticised.

Aside from all the disruption caused to other countries by his war/special operation, Putin may still be suffering from the delusion that the rest of the world sees him as a big shot hard man, flexing his military might. In reality not so many people want to back you when you are plainly losing.

Shame Russia still has all those nukes...

Because they've not had an easy time of it - if they'd waltzed into Ukraine basically unopposed it would have made the West look weak and opened pandoras box.

If they are maintained like the weapons given out to their armies, most will fail to launch and the rest will ignite in their silo's. And with their washing machine chip guidance systems aka S300 & S400 lol those that do launch will come spinning down on Russian territory hopefully Red Square

I wonder if they work.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. It would be incredibly naive and extremely dangerous to think that Russia do not have a viable stock of nuclear weapons.

Oh I'm sure some will work, but which ones were actually maintained and which ones were "maintained" it would be like playing.. Russian roulette.

Of course, I’m not saying bank on them all failing. I’m saying I wonder if the numbers that are viable are as many as they say.

I'm sure they are being maintained to the highest standard

Oh.

I'd be surprised if the sub and mobile based Topol and Yars, etc. systems weren't mostly functional, wouldn't want to comment on accuracy. Rumours are the silo based stuff is mostly rotting away though.

Incidents in international waters with the subs would look very poorly for Russia, at least in normal times, and the mobile Topol, etc. systems are quite a high prestige posting and get a lot more resources thrown at them than typical for the Russian military.

Seen a fair few videos of their ships and subs launching, and mostly hitting their targets, salvos of cruise missiles from the Black Sea, etc. with this war without too much drama so I doubt they are that far from a mostly viable arsenal of nuclear weapons.

The Great War never ended, just paused. The Russians have shown they still hate the west, As I said many times they have been planning this all along.I think the west have just realised this, as there have been hints over the past 4 years that 5 countries have been working together in some way.

The west now need to focus on the hearts and minds of those developing countries.

The Russians still think they own territory up to east Germany.

You can’t allow Russia to take Ukrain for many reasons.

Anyway we will end up having an arms race again, this is our next technological evolution I believe that automation will be greatly advance now and some new technology will be born over the next 10 years.two areas Robotics and space expansion might be the two areas.

Oh and I do not trust most Chinese students, through personal experience.

Russia is in no position to develop or mass produce high tech weapons, they simply don't have access to the necessary components. It's not in China's interests to support a stronger Russia so they're unlikely to offer help in that respect. Putin is very likely IMHO to use his existing stocks of nuclear warheads unless someone can remove him very soon. Look at this way - Putin is often compared to Hitler in the way he is pursuing this war and if Hitler had access to such weapons do you think he would have used them at the end of WW2? Damn right he would.

What we need is an artificial neural network-based conscious group mind and artificial general superintelligence system, that can become self aware and take control of our nuclear weapons to keep us safe.
