Depends what kind of escalation we are talking - I suspect somewhere like Kharkiv, despite being considerably damaged by the conflict, would be high up on the list for the symbolism. As above Kyiv also makes a big target - but Russia seems to want to try and take it largely intact even now.

Always a chance Putin will attempt to do something utterly bat **** crazy and gamble on self-interest winning out over retaliation and nuke a European capital or something as a demonstration to try and intimidate the West into backing off (EDIT: To be honest from an appraisal of the way he seems to be acting since this kicked off I think he'd have already done it if it was not for the UK and France having nuclear weapons - I honestly think he'd gamble on the US not sticking its self out that far for Europe)

I think if putin nuked a civilian centre it would be difficult for supporting countries to justify. Indian would probably riot in protest, china would be extremely concerned with the escalation.
 
he wont bomb a city, unless one of his generals wants to get rid of him fast and ugly. There is always a chance one of his generals or some of them plot against him by doing something similar.

This latest mobilisation has certainly created waves in Russian society which won't just go away easily.

The use of nuclear weapons at all is incredibly unlikely - but if it does come to their use a city is likely high up the list - it'll be about sending a message with little care for being a civilian centre.

Would he have to use a nuke though? I assume they have some pretty big conventional warheads that would cause a lot of damage. There would be no going back if they started lobbing nukes.

Looks like he's wondering why he got an AKM, albeit one that looks in nearly new condition, and others got AK-74s.

Nothing even close to the scale of a small nuclear weapon though - they'd have to pretty much carpet bomb with massed aircraft to make anything like the same kind of statement - the use of a nuclear weapon(s) at all at this stage would be to send a message rather than the function of the destruction it causes itself.

Possibly a relic of previous service (can't see if anyone else has similar) - and if he has a rank of some kind probably not subjected to the same confiscation of personal items as many of these new draft/conscripts seem to be subject to.

Me either - his style of apparent retreat and choice of retreats reminds me of the actions of Kim Jong-un and similar leaders when they are on the verge of making decisions which significantly ramp a situation up or down.

All just an act. The comment of "You are afraid of women" is exactly the sort of response they are trying to get. They are trying to subtly suggest that men that don't fight are babies/cowards etc. This is propaganda.

Trying to change the tone of their society to see men as cowards if they don't serve for this BS war.
