Any tips for buying used?

Whilst I’m waiting around before making a decision on my full system build, I am more and more starting to consider a used GPU. My only resources for purchase of a used card are the typical ones someone would use that don’t have access to the MM and I won’t hit the caveat to do so any time soon.

Not sure if I can name those places for used gpus but I’ll assume not. When buying a physical product or things in general im more knowledgeable about i would know what to be on the look for to ensure I didn’t end up with a pig.

Does any one have any advice for purchasing used components and specifically gpu’s. I’m able to go from a 3060ti to a 3080 based off priced iv seen but a 3080 that’s had a dogs life is going to be no good,

Thanks in advance

mostly you usually will not get the benefit of manufacturer warranty, but could consider getting gigabyte as their warranty is/was based off the serial number (unless they have changed this after the crypto craze)
if you're buying it off the bay then their buyer guarantee is a gem
if you're buying off FB or gumtree i would ask for videos of it working and ask them to allow you to run the card in your pc first (ie bring your pc along and test it out before any exchange of money)

yeah pick it up in person and ask the seller to show it working in their PC or yours, a genuine PC gamer should be ok with that and they don't want issues post sale anymore than you do

seen some good deals on FB just check the profiles to see if they look dodgy or not, most the state of people selling on their though :S

I'd be afraid of catching something of the gpu.

try to get a 3060ti for around 250, I saw some woman selling a EVGA 3090 near me for 450 but it got snapped up whilst I was deliberating

wtf does that even need deliberating?
i'm off to check my local FB lol
The add said it was from her kids computer so only used a few hours a day.

like kids 3090? her profile was just pics of her and 2 kids about 8 or so and normal posts about the kids school.
sold by time I went back to the advert lol

was from some small village about 20miles away from me, must have been some posh person or something, even CEX would by the card for more than her listing I bet

Iv seen two 3080tis last night one was 450 and another 475

just check FB Marketplace near me, 2 3090s, one £460 and the other £500. Also a supposedly unused but without packaging 3080 for £380. Seems a little too good to be true but all profiles seem like decent people.
Still more that I'd want to pay for a second hand gpu without a warranty

Would I be right in saying, much more likely to end up with an ex-mining card if someone bought AMD?
The exact opposite. Ampere was better at mining than AMD cards. If you're looking at older stuff it's pretty much a wash. Radeon VII should be avoided at all costs though according to Buildzoid, as they're very prone to failure and likely to be on their last legs at this point.

Duh...my mistake I meant the opposite way round. I thought AMD were less good at mining, as I sold my 3060ti for £1100. I don't claim to know much on the subject though.

Hmmm, I'll definitely be staying AMD if go used.

the rules i go on are dont buy from people who call you fella, claim they lost or threw boxes and manuals, or people who are regularly slitting or selling whole systems

The 6000 series cards have relatively small buses which they made up for with the infinity cache, but that didn't really help with mining performance. There were people who got them, but getting your money back was always going to be a challenge. I'd say the Polaris cards (e.g. 470/480/570/580) or 5000 series were more commonly used. Nvidia non-LHR cards are more likely to have mined on.
