X670e Mobos, are all a bit... boring?

Like many I am planning a Ryzen 7000 build, but while planning out the options today, one thing really struck me.

How boring all the motherboards are?

Compare to alderlake where they had really solid aesthetics all around for the most part, including that magnificent glacial model by Asus.

Compare it to the lineup this time and... isnt it all a bit bland?

MSI fair a little better.

But even still, the ACE which had probably the better aesthetic and more acceptable pricepoint:

But no 90 degree connectors, come on MSI this is still an ultra high end mobo in 2022.

But then we compare the X670e godlike:

To the z690 godlike...

Like what the hell MSI, give me more of THAT.

Gigabytes offerings are just embarassing:

Really gigabyte, are you even trying? Just look at this masterpiece you did for the 570...

Asrocks offerings are not bad, though not to my taste.

For a new platform, pushing flagship mobos on the flagship chipset, it all seems, a bif naff really?! Has anyone spotted something truely jaw dropping yet?

This might just be my personal thing, but... What exactly exactly does "jaw dropping" mean for you?

Cosmetic look?

Or functionality?

Personally, (of the last 20 years at least) nearly all my cases have always been under the desk/table, and thus for me the only time I look inside the case, is when something has catastrophically happened to the system, or I'm performing an upgrade or internal maintenance. So "jaw dropping" for me, has been about functionality and (more recently) about silence.

That Z690 Godlike for example, from that image angle, looks like that block on the right of the motherboard might interfere with a longer GPU. And would be a no-no for selection automatically even if it looked good as it would prevent me from getting a decent GPU in.

:: edit ::

Ah, I re-read a bit I missed first time reading your post and see that it's cosmetic/aesthetics you're talking about. :)

In which case, it's still largely the same as above and not a real concern here (for me). After all, even when I did have the case on top of the desk/table, I'm not looking into the insides of the case. As the monitor is where all the action is (whether it's gaming, videos, browsing, etc). Any "prettiness" inside the case, that can distract me from any of those, is that; a distraction and shouldn't be there really. Does anyone play Street Fighter and look inside their case whilst competing at a pro level? Command and Conquer and admire the RGB whilst their base is being decimated? Or performing Photoshop requests from online forums for a laugh :D and creates excellent requests whilst not looking at the monitor? Or watch a movie whilst looking at the mini-screen on the motherboard?

But again, that's me and how I view it.

However, since I do place it under the desk/table, I can admire any aesthetics/cosmetics when I do need to check up on it. And in that sense, I agree that there is a certain level of mediocrity compared to other designs, but again, look improvements shouldn't come ahead of functionality. Again, that Z690 MEG Godlike with that brick on the right hand side that's very clearly on the same level as the top PCIe slot, is an automatic deal breaker. No looks can save that one because that's clearly going to conflict with longer GPU cards.

To followup on this thread.

All the Z790 mobos got announced today, and pretty much all of them, including the mid range boards put all of these to shame.

What an absolute shame it is that the intel stuff gets the real love and the amd stuff is just an afterthought :(

Considering it'll be covered by the CPU cooler and GPU, it's never been a priority for me.

I'm more interested in the B650 boards, the X670 is just too expensive.

Starting at £350, I would expect at least heatsink for all the NVME and integrated I/O. Silly, maybe, but the overall feeling was of entry level motherboard.
Personally I wouldn't mind if buying a £100 motherboard, but some of those starting at £350 and don't even offering PCI-E 5.0 is a joke.
RGB or lack of it for me is a non-issue, as I don't shop for any component based on RGB alone. Is more like a plus.

I agree with the OP, some of these are trash-level aesthetically and really low effort, and when you're paying stupid amounts for a MOBO, I think people deserve better. And as the above poster discussed they're not even well-featured either.

These x670E mobos having 2x16 slots for gpu means both gpu slots are electricaly x16 middle one and bottom one?

The highest I've seen for the second slot is 8 lanes (3 slot boards: 8/8/4, not taking into account any lanes shared with m.2).

Have to laugh giving a poop what a motherboard looks like, I mean if you are 12 and want to show it to your friends then maybe

I'd prefer if we went back to the days of the Abit NF7-S days, where you bought a board based on it being the best for your application. I work with 'boring" looking boards, but find the functionality more important, and they are still interesting.

Each to their own, guess it's like buying skins in a game that offer nothing but pixels on a screen.
