Which Fallout game?

I was going through my Epic Games list yesterday and was thinking about giving one of the Fallout games a go as I don't think I've ever tried any!

Any suggestions as to which to start with or do they all follow a story?

Depends what you want. Fallout 1+2 are not like Fallout 3 onwards. If you want a 3D loot/shoot/explore rpg, most would probably say play New Vegas. I think I still prefer Fallout 3 mainly due to the feel of the game, but both Fallout 3 and New Vegas definitely feel a bit dated, so if that's an issue for you then go straight to Fallout 4. I've left out the elephant in the room, which is Fallout 76, mainly because, AFAIK, it's a bit different again, I haven't touched it nor do I know much about it. It's on Gamepass IIRC, so you could try it on there. Though I'd imagine most would say not to try that as your introduction to the series.
I don't recall there being any real links between the games, other than they're set in the same world, so the order doesn't really matter.

Fallout 1 and 2 have turn based combat - IIRC they're similar to the Wasteland games. I've also never touched them, so I can't comment on them. I probably should since I enjoyed Wastelands 2.

Also, I'd advise mods. Even if you don't install ones that change a massive amount of things, the mods that fix things are more than likely going to be unanimously suggested.

Fallout 3 and NV are both on sale on GOG at the moment, I seem to recall there being a reason FO3 on GOG was a better buy at one point. Maybe to do with the DRM causing issues, but I can't remember and I'd hope it's sorted on steam now. I have the steam version of both FO3 and NV and I've not had any major issue to my knowledge.

Fallout new vegas and fallout 4 are the only two i would bother playing and even then i get really tired of them about 13 hours in and quit

Fallout New Vegas is the best one, easily.

4 is, ok? It forces the base building too much and the voiced protag is a total turn off for me as it kills my immersion.

I played fallout 1&2 in the last few years and really enjoyed them. If you can get past the dated graphics I would suggest you start at the beginning.
Beyond that fallout nv is the best of the others in terms of interesting role playing.

Thanks all - I've usually got a fairly short attention span for games so I might try some of the later ones first if you don't absolutely have to have played the earlier stuff first!

Fallout 4 is the best.

New Vegas is good.

3 hasn't aged well.

The original 2 are classics, but you might not get past how old they are initially.

Just my opinion.

I put about 1000 hours in Fallout 4 it's very easy to mod and mould the game to your liking.

New Vegas is fantastic, but you'll need to apply fan patches and look into mods to get the most out of it.

Three aged terribly and was so-so at best to begin with.

Four is by far the worst of the bunch as far as the new style titles (so 3 onward) go, Far Harbour was fantastic though and it's a crying shame the entire game wasn't made to the same standard.

If you have a poor attention span RPG's in general might not be for you, but you'll struggle a lot more with 1 + 2 or Brotherhood of Steel compared to the newer games.

All apart from those daft isometric ones...

Heresy!

For your 1st Fallout game, I'd probably go for no.4. It's the most accessable.
Fallout 3 is my favourite, but I havn't played it in years, so I'll take other peoples word on that it hasn't aged well.

On that note, I might upset a few people. I don't think New Vegas has aged particular well.
I played it about 3 years ago (I bought it on release, but never finished it), and the amount of crashes I had was really jarring, even with a load of fan patches. Getting mods to work was another issue.
While it had better gameplay then no.3, the story and the characters didn't really grab me.

I never played the original 2, NV was class and 4 was decent.

I must have spent almost 1000 hrs in 4 building a Mega Fortress with a Power Armour museum.

If only i could transfer my stuff over from PS4 to PC.

Fallout 4 is my favourite, followed by New Vegas and then FO3 but I've got hundreds of hours in them all there's also some superb and very substantial DLCs as well which really add a lot of gameplay.
I'd say play them all but play them vanilla with no mods unless its fixing bugs etc.

Cant comment on FO1 or 2 as I cant stand any isometric view games of any genre.
