Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Just called Octopus to see if I could switch over to their Go Faster tariff (4 hours a night of cheap electricity). Bit annoying that you need to go onto the fully variable first (68p/kwh and 25p standing charge) - for up to 16 days! Can see this becoming a headache...

Won't take them long if you have the SMET2 meter, Go is 4 hours @7.5p time 00.30-4.30AM, Go Faster is 5 hours @ 8.25p can start from 9.30pm.
You chose your 5-hour time to start Go faster, any time from 9.30 to just after midnight.

Ah ok, go faster is 4 or 5 hours and variable start time

When I switched it detected elec meter within 24 hours.
Still got issues with my gas though, they have 2 meters on my account as they picked up my old non smart one as well
I think there is another tariff that is in BETA that has variable start time. Go Faster looks like it is just from a specific (but defined/fixed) start time. The actual unit rate is cheaper than my EON tariff, too.

Good to hear the 2 weeks has lots of fat in it though... 68p/kwh is daylight robbery.

I doubt it but wonder if they let you go on Tracker (currently 34p/kwh).

Looks like it four hours now.

I have a SMETS2 Landis+GyrE470.

Go Faster has choices of start time and also duration, 4 or 5 hours, 5 hours has slightly higher unit rates.

There are various versions of Go Faster.

How do I find the current unit cost for a basic, common or garden none DD domestic account with Scottish Power? I want to work out the cost of using 700 Watts of energy for 15 hours in every 24 hour period. Thanks. I haven't received a current itemised bill, only a text showing last quarter's payment amount.

All their variable tariffs are beta

But as Hippo says below, go faster has like 7 options, 4 or 5 hours, start time 9:30-0:30 (in hourly intervals), think 5 hours is 9:30-11:30 start time

Are you sure that's SMETS2? I've got that model and it's only SMETS1 and is needing to be swapped out for a new meter later this month, so I'm also stuck on Octopus Variable until I get the meter, although it's not at all as high as mentioned earlier in this thread, it's just the normal price cap rate of 33p or whatever.

Cap price just for electric used = 10.5kWh @0.34 =£3.57

Should basically be 34p give or take a little

Ah yeah sorry it is even more nuanced than I realised - I have the E470 with the big Toshiba comms box on the roof:

I may hold off until the boiler is done. The gas rate from Octopus is 40% more than EON.

OK, thanks Troop and MKW, appreciated, just working out how much keeping the dogs warm at night when the frosts come will rush me this winter. I need to get straight back to the workshop now, cheers! :)

For the shell enerfy people - It said on their website somewhere that if your DD comes out in the first week of the month your DD might not be discounted but will be on the next months bill so - looks like some of us will pay full this month and get the next 6 bills reduced. Not too bothered personally. I would link to the page but Shell Energy is coming up internal server error for me at the moment.

How do you mean? I thought it was just the special one that talks to your car/car charger?
He means all the special rates (like the GO and GO Fastsr tariffs) are treated as “beta” by Octopus - effectively they’re still on trail and could be cancelled.

Also the rate is generally dictated by the smart meter being able to give half-hourly readings. There’s only one or two that use comms with EVSEs.

Interesting - I knew the super smart/car charger comms one was BETA but didn't realise the others were too. I guess they are fully variable regardless so can go in any direction.

UK at significant risk of gas shortages this winter, warns energy regulator - BBC News
The UK is facing "a significant risk" of gas shortages this winter, according to the industry regulator, which could impact electricity supplies.

Ofgem said due to Russia's war with Ukraine, there is a possibility the UK could enter a "gas supply emergency".

This would lead to supplies being cut to power stations which use gas to generate the country's electricity.

Glad I stocked up on some candles recently.

yes - if electric goes out, unless you have an alternative power source for combi-boiler&pump the heat is gone too (cheap invertor on a car battery?)

Are the v17 rates less than the current EPG capped rates?

Nope, more expensive.

Elec - 50.71
Gas - 12.86

Vs

Elec - 33.76
Gas - 10.28

Saving me about £25/month (not including trlhe £67/month CoL payment)

Power cuts all but envitable, the question is how long will the lights go out for?

Xmas day for 4 days my guess.
I doubt it, EDF (my employer) have already fired up two previously decommissioned Coal plants (it's cheaper to import coal from Australia than run the gas plants) in readiness for the coming winter, And dropped production to the bear minimum from gas generation plants. Only 28GW are generated via gas plants currently as renewables have taken over a large portion of production.

Gas production has been massively scaled down since 2016 (127TWh) to the current 28GWh, there are several sources of renewable energy due to come online in the next 6months that should pick up the slack before it gets to the point of brown/black outs.
