Genuinely, how can this resolve peacefully?

I still go back to the absolute best outcome for the world is Ukraine loses some territory. It joins nato. Putin has his win. Cold War ensues. But Ukraine will never accept this. And rightly so.

Anything else is a loss for putin. And he's a loose Canon.

I wrote this before. But my uncle is also a loose Canon and said that if he was diagnosed with a terminal disease he would shoot members of my family.

He may mean it. He may not. But it's a hell of a statement when someone isn't of sound mind. I genuinely don't know if my uncle would do it. There's a lot of hate. A lot.

My reading of the Nuclear issue is that he mobilised to allow 1m conscripts to legally enter the fight in Ukraine. It makes no sense to drop a nuke while you still have 1m soldiers to be killed for you. My suspicion is if those 1m are gone, and his army is also gone he truly has nothing else to use. If he was going to use nukes there would be no need to mobilise so many up front. I suspect he is gambling that between now and his army(+1m) a suitable situation will arise he can claim as a win.

Putin is not stupid. He will know that even using a tactical nuke while there are still soldiers to defend the motherland will result in Russia being isolated from everyone and everwhere.

It would need Russia to accept this hasn't worked and isn't going to work and offer a workable peace to Ukraine - but everyday Ukraine will feel less inclined to compromise as their situation improves.

The sensible thing for Russia to do would be to cut their losses and repair their standing in the world - and have a good hard look at their armed forces and probably rebuild a large force that can protect their own borders and accept the reality that they cannot afford to go off on adventurios wars of conquest.

But there are many examples of countries not doing the sensible thing; sometimes that works out.

Personally I can't see putin backing down. If he was rational he would never have started this war.

Really. Could do with china/India being a bit more aligned with the west.
Its now in thier interests too surely?

OK, so look at it this way. Even if countries don't retaliate with nukes if Russia did, what do you think is gonna happen. Any goodwill it still has remaining in the world will just evaporate.

Even if he uses a low yield tactical nuke in the field, not only would Putin be over. Russia as a country would be over. It would be overran and broken up like the USSR was so it would never be a threat again. And i would love to see China's reaction to that, their biggest ally disappearing in a puff of smoke.

The world would be over at that point. Russia is a mess. But its a dangerous mess

I can't see him doing so either, which only really leaves Ukraine or Russia winning as the end result and a Ukraine victory might just mean they are sat on the borders shelling each other from time to time.

Don't count on it, since the cold war ended it's apparent Russia has always been a paper tiger. And i believe China and N.Koera are too to a lesser extent. They count on illusion to show strength

I can't see putin backing down
I can't see the west letting up in Ukraine
Therefore I see putin being backed into a corner.

I'm genuinely surprised how Ukraine is still in this let alone doing this well.

Yes. I know West is supplying material goods. But you'd have thought through casualties Ukraine would be screwed.

All putin need is a handful of nukes and a tantrum. I'm sure nato know what Russia is capable of

They mobilised their reserves some months ago, their estimated army is now about 750K. What I would have done is uses my regulars to keep the Russians held in place, rotating out as needed and use the time to get the 600K properly trained and equiped with nice shiny NATO gear and then go for it.

Ukraine can mobilise a significant number of trained troops well armed, armoured, and motivated. It appears that Russia is less able in this respect. The size of the country does not reflect the ability of its forces.
