The best out would be actually if he went to "war", then conscriptions will be made in the inner cities etc, and more and more chance the people there are not going to have it.
 
Surely he'll have to turn it into defense of Russia to hopefully get his people more accepting of a 'war' because he's getting battered now and he can't stop the Ukrainians.

he's there already.. that's the message russians are getting. They need to protect the motherland.. from themselves.
 
Putin will remain unpredictable and dangerous but I do feel his days may now be numbered. They are in danger of being routed on the battlefield, having set the objective of digging in for winter and making Europe freeze. His reinforcements won't make much difference as they are not trained, not motivated and poorly equipped. Any conscription escalation will lead to more of an exodus. His troops on the ground will be increasingly exhausted, supply lines are being cut and morale must be questionable. If he drops a tactical nuke, NATO will wipe them out in Ukraine and the Black Sea. There is no "off ramp" other than for him to be taken out.

This might be wishful thinking on my part but all the momentum is with Ukraine, for now at least.

Putin disappears, new "leader" in..either blames him for a failed attempt. Or says how great Putin did to defend their interest and borders from the might NATO, withdraw with local news blackout.
These are our best case scenarios, everything else isn't so great.
Still none of it leads to nuclear use like some here are suggesting.
At this point even if he did press the button, it wouldn't surprise me if the silo opened up and a big sheet with the word " bang" is written on it.

I dont think turning most of Ukraine into a sheet of glass and Europe being irradiated is a win situation for anyone but the mentally insane.

If NATO took 1 step into Ukraine that justifies anything, its already been stated that military aide is now officially unacceptable.

IF he nukes anything it with be out of frustration and embarrassment.

I honestly/pessimistically think that something will happen and it will be catastrophic but only in the borders of Ukraine. (+fallout)
As soon as he orders that then he is effectively dead so unless he is terminally ill or just dont give a ****...
Hopefully people in the chain of command will step up at this point.

Its not something ruining my day to day life :P but god its a weird burden to have to think about maybe in passing, once a day.
 
Right now all NATO need to do is keep up the proxy war. They did this when the Soviets invading Afghanistan and have done it in the middle east for decades.

Russia will not be able to win without escalating massively, or by going nuclear. With the sanctions in place limiting the military hardware to mid 90s level, and NATO supplying Ukraine, the Russians will always be at a qualitative disadvantage.

If this goes on for years Russia will be bled dry.

If Putin really want's to help "mother Russia", the best target for his nuke would be the Kremlin with him inside.

Russia should be a decent place to live, seems it's a run down **** hole though.

Unfortunately even if he is toast theres no guarantee he'll be replaced by anyone better he's set the template for corruption and despotism that others will be able to step into easily
