With us - Galaxy S20 FE & Galaxy S21.
Up to £30 (seems to be the case after testing) - Phone needs to be awake, but can remain locked.
Over £30 - Phone needs to be unlocked
Have never had to open any apps on the phones.

My POCO F3 doesnt need to be unlocked.

Same on my S20 FE. I do need to at least wake the phone up but I can make a payment without unlocking the screen.
