Dilemma - 3090ti or wait for 4080 (16gb)

Currently have a 3080 GPU and 5800x CPU and run all my games at 4k (mainly racing games).

I'm tempted by the new lower price of 3090ti cards (around £1,150) that should give me quite a boost from current setup - but also aware that the 16gb 4080 may be an even better choice, but...

  • Confirmed real world prices haven't been confirmed
  • Availability, if anything like the 30 series launch, will push prices up
  • Will the 3090ti prices fall further when the 40 series launches
I know a lot of these cannot be answered right now, but i am getting a 3090ti itch that needs scratching !

Is a hard time to buy for sure, but when is the right time.

My knowledge is limited, but I think the 3090ti might give about 30% upgrade over your 3080.

As always with pc gaming, there is what you need and what you want :)

Do you currently need better performance from your GPU? I am not sure whether some games may become CPU limited - but I guess that depends on what games you are playing. Is a constant journey for some, get the 3090ti and then you may need a better CPU, the maybe a better MB and then a new PSU and then better cooling etc etc

I for one tend to just enjoy playing the games and not worrying too much about the performance, as long as the game is playable. Benchmarks mean nothing in terms of how the games play - more play less worry about specs is very much where I come from.

Are there games you currently struggle to get the gaming experience you want from?

Seems crazy to me to be looking to upgrade form those specs already.

If you really have money burning a hole in your pocket, absolutely wait. See what the 4080 brings. See what AMD brings.
See how crazy the market ends up being this time.
Get some numbers... is this gen really such a big leap?
Hos the power use? The noise? The Coil-whine?

These would all be questions id wait to get answers for before planning to upgrade anything.

In your situation I would wait out and see what happens to the market. It’s likely you’ll be able to grab a 4080 and that 3000 prices will drop further.

If you can't stretch to a 4090 then would 100% be waiting for the 4080 16gb although your going to have to wait another month for that but considering you are on a 3080 i would say wait till the 4080 16gb is released and get that rather than the 3090Ti which while still a very good card is about to be superseded by another card in your price range .

Cost 32% more but gives you 69% more on compute spec and 38% higher memory bandwidth. No brainer to pay the extra to get the 4090. You are 'most' of the way there for paying for it for the cost of a 4080 16GB.

And so much of a gap in cuda cores between 4080 16GB and 4090, Nvidia will almost certainly devalue these 4080s in a years time with a huge price drop when they inevitably drop the 4080 Ti whereas a 4090 Ti won't be that much better than a 4090 (as per 3000 series).

Both 4080s are a terrible value proposition.

I 100% agree with you , its just if the op can afford the extra outlay of £410 for an the upgrade from a 4080 16gb to a 4090 ( extra £530 if budget is £1150 ) .... if they can then 100% the 4090 as it will be noticeably better :)
