Current rig in sig.

Been waiting to update my trusty 1080Ti
Considering the 4090 or is that overkill?
I game at 3440x1440

Would be happy to upgrade the CPU as well if needed, thinking to a 5800X 3D?
And doubling the ram to 32gb (2 x 16gb)

Will also need a new PSU (advice on that please - 1000w to give room for future upgrades?)

Or am I better off going the whole hog and doing the mobo as well? (but I have been happy with what I have, would I see a worthwhile bump in performance with a new 7000AMD CPU?)

Many thanks

If you are a 1440p gamer I think the above is overkill you could save a considerable amount and be golden for a long time.

58003d you don’t need but it’s a great chip. 1440p can be played on like 3060ti upwards or 6700xt soo depends on how crazy you want to go. Could always snag a good deal and see how things go

Id stick with your motherboard

I was hoping to stay with my current mobo tbh, it has been great so far.
Was considering upgrading CPU as thought my 3700X would be a bottleneck with a newer gfx card?
Cannot decide if going 3080/3090 is worth the £ with it been older gen now?

Upgrading from Ryzen 3700x to 5800X3D is a good idea if gaming is your primary use. No real rush to do this so look out for a good price on that cpu , hopefully pound will improve and drive prices down. DDR4 is also well priced so no real harm in getting 32gb if you are planning to use the pc for a long period of time, I wouldnt get all new ram , can you not just get another 2 sticks of what you already have? The 5800X3D is not as memory sensitive as the other Ryzen 3 cpus , it has the huge 3D cache to help with that.

I would wait for the independent reviews for the 4000 cards from Nv to come out. I have a feeling that normal rasterisation performance may not be that much of an upgrade and they have cherry picked and fiddled with the results they have shown us. Of course they do this , i am not naive, should always always wait for independent reviews. 1080ti is no slouch so you could always wait for RDNA3 and you then will have the full picture.

Power supply. The new spec psus are just being released and there are issues so hard to advise. I think there will be an updated spec withing a year or so. This is also a good reason to wait for RDNA3 to come out to see if they are less power hungry and how they deal with current and new psus.

A 3700X will be a bottleneck with a 40 series, but how much depends on the game, the resolution/detail settings and your own tolerances.

Buying now is not really the ideal time, in my opinion, because the 40 series have just launched at silly prices and we haven't seen any response from AMD or Intel (don't laugh) yet. I don't have a big hope of the (2023) midrange cards being priced reasonably, but surely it can't get any worse :p

Hmmm decisions decisions.....its hard delaying when you have the upgrade itch.
My monitor is a Predator X34P so G-sync is a must (not aiming to change the monitor just yet).
My PC is mainly used for gaming, so I may wait a while longer to decide on gfx card and also do ram, CPU and power supply.

with 3080 12gb at £750 to £800, if going for that or above, I'd wait for 4000 series. the 4070, ahem, 4080 12gb will still outperform it and have dlss3, which current gen cards wont be able to use. When games start utilising that, that'll give a big advantage down the line.
I'd like to see what AMD's 7000 series cards are capable of though. I've a feeling they're the one to go for as think they should be cheaper(from what I've seen production costs s/b less), which may have the knock on effect of 4000 cards being reduced in price too(though I doubt it)
If I remember correctly, both nvidia and amd are tied in to taking a set amount of silicon (they both tried to reduce their orders but were told no), so should be plenty of next gen cards around too(well, after initial feeding frenzy)...feeling nvidia with those prices might end up with a lot of cards..

Ok thanks, happy to go 1000w
Any particular brand or model?

Cheers
We all go for PSUs with good warranties. Any PSU with a 10 year or more warranty should be better value over time than a cheaper PSU that lasts half as long (I'm not saying it will last half as long but with a 10 year warranty, you are promised 10 years use).

The better warranty almost certainly gives you better components. It's not always the case but I doubt any company with a decent name would risk giving a decent warranty to a turd of a PSU.

This is what I would get. It's expensive but there isn't a lot in stock.

I would consider ATX 2.0 PSUs but you want a gen 3 for the future.

Seen the 1000W EVGA supernova P6 Platinum on offer for £139.99 reduced from £190, with free delivery...
Very happy with my Corsair RM1000X, though seems to be sold out most places, incl. here

I changed my mind and have gone for the Asus on Pre-order.
Thanks for the advice :)
You're welcome.

I'd think that a very well made PSU will be a good investment and going for the new standard just adds legs to that long term purchase.

I'm happy with my AM4 system as the new AM5 and Intel products are too expensive for my wallet but it doesn't mean I wouldn't love to buy them.
