Anyone turned their heating on yet ?

Started putting ours on for short periods and tbh, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the cost. From the 1-8 oct, we’ve only spent £16 on gas. That’s about £64 a month. Although I’d imagine it’s gonna get a lot more expensive in the deepest winter.

Its annoying they couldn't fit a smart to ours. It means I have to keep on to of meter reads. I do this monthly.

Can't compare to any other years as last year our bills were a complete mess

It involves finding the ones in the house that get hot first and restricting the flow to them via the lock shield valve (on the other side to the TRV). This then forces flow to rads at the end of the loop and once you go down the whole lot you can reach a point where all your rads heat up at the same rate since they are getting proportional flow to their size. This is very important for efficiency and is often overlooked by plumbers because the process can take days to get right so they often don't bother. With an unbalanced system you can end up with a couple hot rads with too much flow passing hot water back to the boiler and reducing the amount of condensing its doing and lowering your efficiency (as well as the uncomfortableness of cold rooms with rads with not enough flow)

The short story is that balancing radiators is an awful job and that the setup of radiators is dreadful. This is only suitable for full load. As soon as you get into part load, you're screwed.

At work we sell Danfoss valves that balance automatically. They're awesome.

Not completely, you can get around partial load issues by setting your pump to proportional pressure operation if you don't have automatic valves

Turned the CH on for a couple of hours this morning, think that might be the norm now for a while, temps have definitely dropped here.

Why couldn't they fit a gas smart meter?

Only had mine on to test it a couple of weeks ago. Most of the rooms are still staying around 18/19C without heating on. So far weather has been a bit mild so hasn't really been needed.

Apparently the install is "weird" and and they'd have to redo piping and meter box or something.

Warm months, May, June, July, August, September. October people will put there heating on a little, November a little bit more, full bore during December, January, February, March and April a little bit less, then repeat..

Cold tonight, won't be long until the fire gets lit, once I've cracked I'll be craving that warm glow every night.

Couple of cooler nights this week but house is still holding up well. Living room gets down to mid-19's by the morning but soon recovers again during the day. Still plenty warm enough. Got bedroom windows wide open to keep that nice and cool.

Can I ask what tech you're using for all of this?

No and I won't be - it's not that I can't afford it particularly but I absolutely begrudge lining the pockets of energy companies that are making massive profits. That said, I work from home so it's been a rough couple of weeks!
Not cold enough to turn in on yet. The coldest it has been so far is 16c last night, if I get cold I can always retreat to my PC :)

Gas and electric companies are making too much profit. Not passing down savings. Which is disgusting. Same as big food companies.

The only thing they care about is profit and no compassion from the chiefs for anyone apart from their pockets. Absolute rats the lot of them.

To be fair I think some of them can't actually believe they're not being taxed more on the excess profits and fully believed they would have been by now. Was it the chief exec of Shell who said the other day that imposing additional taxes was the morally correct thing to do?
