I've said this umpteen times, but why the hell are senior government positions not awareded to those with a proven effective track record in what are highly specialised fields?

The entire political institution in the UK is designed to accumulate the Etonian/Oxbridge career politicians that creep and network and backstab their way to the top mired in sleaze, particularly in the Tory party.

We don't have a meritocracy in this country because it isn't allowed to happen.

Hunt has no financial background other than his PPE degree (Oxford) but he's in as chancellor, why? Because a deal will have been cut, probably to position him as the next PM and stabilise the ship. Appointing someone actually experienced would mean looking outside the usual candidates that have been in it since teenagers.
