Blue badge question

The system needs a rethink. In my opinion I'd say a blue badge should only be given to people who have trouble walking. It seems that any illness can be considered a disability and be given the badge.

I'd agree with this. I know the typical argument is that not all disabilities are visible, but tbh it should only be mobility disabilities that are eligible.

If you have the ability to walk 100 meters round a shop then you clearly don't need to be parked just outside the door.

Why does he need a blue badge? Do blue badges remove danger?
I imagine it means they don't have to cross the carpark.

We initially had one when my son was on oxygen. To some that doesn't count as a disability, but when the bottle your carrying starts to run out and your trying to get back to the car as fast as possible and swing the door open without a care. A blue badge was great.
Now he has it for walking difficulties, and needing help getting in and out of the car.
Don't judge others.

Re OP - I presume that the person who got out of the car also doesn't qualify for a blue badge?

Not sure how you'd tell, not everybody with a blue badge has a visible disability.

Not that I care where others park tbh. That's for them and their conscience.

If you misuse your badge on purpose you could be fined up to £1000, for example if you:
  • give it to someone else to use if they’re not your driver
  • keep using your badge when you no longer need it
  • use your badge to park if you’re just waiting, and don't plan to leave your car
The blue badge is intended for on street parking only though. A supermarket is private land so it's up to Tesco etc. how they enforce use of their car park and what penalties they might issue.

Also some blue badge holders think they can park where they like. There’s an elderly couple that parks on a dual carriageway in a hidden dip by the library when they visit. Why couldn’t they park in the disabled bays in the car park behind? There’s a disabled access there too. The entrance you go up steps or ramp. Whereas the disabled access has a lift.

Surprised that their car hasn’t got any dents.

Tell them, not us.

If they're parking somewhere they're not allowed to park, or where it would endanger, inconvenience or obstruct pedestrians or other road users, report them.

I have a blue badge. I have a chronic condition and some days I feel absolutely fine so I don't use it.

Others have said, the scheme is abused significantly and sometimes badges are handed out to people who don't deserve one. Someone I know got one because she has debilitating migranes. My view is that if they're that bad then she should have her licence revoked for her safety and others.

Personally BBs should ONLY be for those who are not PHYSICALLY able to walk great distances. What irks me is that you'll get someone, usually an OAP, gets one because they can't walk far but then will spend 3-4 hours pottering around town before getting back in the car.

Additionally I don't think BB holders should be entitled to free parking. Priority spaces near the doors, yeah sure. Free parking no. Parking fees are part of car ownership, pay up.

Should people park in disabled bays when the blue badge holder isn’t leaving the car?

No, I always make sure I get out with my wife even if I return 5 minutes later.
The Blue Badge is for me and not her.
There was a story the other week where the abled wife got out of the car to get her husbands prescription and they were fined.

Here you go, it was the other way around and don't laugh at the husbands name

Faith somewhat restored in humanity with folks in this thread! Good to know not everyone lacks consideration for others.

My wife has a blue badge, if she's not getting out of the car then I don't park in a disabled bay.

Yeah same here. To me the space is close to the entrance to make life easier for her.

It's horrible how self conscious you can feel though with disabled bays. If i drop my wife off and then wait in the car, i just look like some ****, and then even worse if we're out together but i nip back to the car to grab something!
