Hi
My graphics card is needed in a different computer so I get the luxury of buying a new one. My specs are below. I'll be sticking with Nvidia.

i5-3470 (1155 socket)
8 Gig of RAM
970gtx
SSD 500gb
Game at 1080p

I've been looking at a 2060, it seems to be a nice upgrade at an 'affordable price'. Would I benefit with the 2060? Or will my RAM and processor just bottle neck the whole system? I have an extra stick of 4gb RAM I could stick in, but would that be next to usless?
Having to change the processor would mean building a whole new system, I'm not too keen on spending that much. I'm kind of intent on hanging on to this motherboard for as long as I can. I played Cyberpunk 2077 on fairly decent settings with no problems. If there is no benefit in getting a 2060, I will probably try to find another 970, since it does everything i need.

Thanks for any advise.

i just checked on a bottleneck calculator ( i dont know how accurate they are to be honest ) and it came up with 41% bottleneck and that does not even take into consideration that you only have 8gb of RAM that could also bottleneck you.

I would say to try to save up for an i5-8600K / 2060 Super / 16gb RAM combo.

That'll be a bit overkill for me. I can play all the latest games with my spec, so such a major overhaul is not worth it for me (At least until my setup dies). From what you say though, I might look into upping my RAM to 16gb. Thanks.

definitely 16gb ram is a must, and ddr 3 is cheap - just get it used

to put it in "generation-equivalent terms" for comparison
gtx 970 rougly equals a 1060 3gb
2060 is basically a 1080 for all intents

difference between a 1060 3gb and 1080 is ~70% performance uplift
also you get all the other generational improvements going from a 970 to 2060 such as gsync and dlss and rtx

These are numbers I can get with :D

I ordered some RAM 2nd hand the same as what I have. I thought I should have more but never had the motivation to get it. £18 well spent... As long as it works.
I'll dive a bit deeper into the 2060 and see what is out there. Noticed OcUK have them on offer, but none in stock. £250ish is a good price for me.

Thanks for the advise.

i wouldn't get the 2060 new either.

the member's market has some good deals if you're willing to go used
if you're looking to spend that much, might as well get a 2070 super for cheaper here: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/eos-clearout-psus-gpus-mobos-cpus-to-add.18959231/
a 2070 super is 2.3x the performance of a 970

I saw those for sale, MM was the first place I checked :D
I'm waiting on an offer for a msi 2060 6gb GDDR6 for £170, but it that falls through I'll check those out. Looks like the Supers variants use less watts?
