HI all,

Returning here 6 years after my last build with my old gpu having died a sad and tragic death. I really know very little about this stuff so the help is appreciated.

I would to love to run at 4k and would need a new monitor but I realise 1440p is more realistic. I think I need a copy of Win11 as well.

I've built a couple of PCs before and am semi aware of issues sourcing GPUs etc...I am not sure if it is getting a pre-built or whether still makes sense to buy components and put together yourself? I've looked at the bundles on OC but no idea what the components are so seems a bit silly.

Here's the current system:

GPU: R9 390
CPU - i5-6600K 3.6GHz
Board: Z170 PRO Gaming
Memory: Elite 8GB DDR4 2400 x 2
Power: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 GS, 80+ GOLD 650W
Case: Phantek Enthoo Pro M
Monitor: Philips 221V2SB 22"

SSD: 1TB WD_BLACK SN750 (this was my boot drive but I can no longer boot from this or seem to fix windows on it)

Many thanks for any advice

Just to add that browsing the forum I noticed a lot of "can you wait for the next gen of......to come out". Seeing as my GPU is dead I'm feeling a bit desperate!

the problem right now, 1200 is not a lot of money

your at about 50% budget for 4k. 1440p mmmm could be doable. now is not the time to build a budget system..

Thanks Wing-man. Having a look around I realised I was delusional! I think it would be worth throwing a bit of extra cash at to get 1440p. Or is 1080p with better refresh better...?

for 1440p this is the minimum i would want... and i want to be clear this is a budget system. i game at 1440p but my GPU wont hit my 144hz FPS cap on my monitor i am looking at buying the same GPU i have spec linked
this doesn't includes windows or a monitor.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,192.80 (includes delivery: £0.00)

i can't think of anywhere you could go cheaper... i looked at b550 motherboards but all the cheap ones are out of stock. you could look in Bgrade and make an offer on some parts iv saved over 30% on the listed Bgrade price in the past but your milage may vary a little. going pcie3 instead of pcie4 on the ssd would save too and TBF you can't tell the difference

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £852.59 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Thank you so much for you time. Perhaps sticking at 1080p could be better - unclear whether this could up other specs more? On reflection it's probably being stuck at 60hz which is the bigger issue.

Windows doesn't matter on reflection. If it is worth the extra investment I could up a couple of hundred £s, but would still need the monitor

I buy Bgrade... I have had zero problems... some may have.

reuse your case. make an offer of £700 for the Bgrade items i linked buy a new Ryzen 5600 and you have a 1440p system for £900, a 1080P system wont cost much less, if any less

Could get a 3060tife for £369...Hardware unboxed 1440p 11 game av had 3060ti 88 fps, 6750xt 97fps..so the amd card is 10% faster but at £499 is 35% more expensive..then theres the 3070fe, but that out of stock at the mo, but at £469 not much in it with the amd card, except better raytracing, though to be fair, I never really turn that on due to hit in fps, though did in Control with dlss
Seen B550 Tuf gaming plus II wifi on offer for £149.99
AMD 5600 £169
crucial 1tb p5p for £98
saw 32 gb 3200c16 pro vengeance sl rgb for £112, or lpx non rgbfor £106 if you want more than 16gb
i'd look to get a fully modular psu with 10yrs warranty. generally slightly more expensive than broanze unit, but if you use regularly, higher efficiency should save some cash from electricity

another option could be something like a intel 12400f for £180 or 12100f for £120 with a b660 board sucu as msi pro b660m-a wifi for £150

Thanks again. How about this:

Adding in current power supply, SSD, case and memory (is there any reason to need to upgrade this?)

Memory: Elite 8GB DDR4 2400 x 2
Power: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 GS, 80+ GOLD 650W
Case: Phantek Enthoo Pro M
SSD: 1TB WD_BLACK SN750

You will need memory because Ryzen needs fast memory to get the best out of it and 2400mhz is going to cripple it. Reuse the psu, case and drive as they are all very good.

Thanks Pasty. So how does this look? I could spend more cash seeing as saved on elements can reuse...could a couple hundred pump this up in a meaningful way?

It's up to you but I would go B550 rather than X570. At that price point I would rather have a very good B550 board than a entry level X570 board. I would spend the extra on a better monitor, maybe a decent IPS screen.

There are a few of the B550s...is there a particular 1 you were thinking? What are the benefits to it over the entry level X570? I think we are only talking 20 / 30 quid or so..

Any chance you can link to a better monitor? :)

Sorry to be a nob but any more for any more? I'm hoping to get an order off today for delivery tomorrow.

Planning on getting most from OCers but saw this elsewhere that seemed like a good buy:

ASUS AMD B550 ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING ATX Motherboard ~£160

bang for buck and features, you cannot beat the Aurus Elite v2.

always good to look at for thermals...this is part 3 of 3 but results show all the boards tested.
The strix gaming f is a good board, though it lacks wifi(you can get it with wifi). also it lacks an internal usb type c connector for the front i/o of your case (if that matters to you)..it used to be the best budget board was the msi b550 tomahawk(no wifi) or the gaming edge which was same board with wifi and better vrm cooling. Prices for b550 boards have shot up so worth going through and just looking at various boards. The aorus elite board is a good budget board and the vid above shows it mid range so s/b good. Only thing I remember is it's built on a 4 layer pcb rather than 6 of the more premium boards
just avoid some of the gigabyte boards at the bottom..thermals where pretty bad, but on whole b550 boards are generally good.
I'd def shop around..prices do fluctuate, def more than p&p...also remember you've over 100 posts, so link your forum a/c to the store..that way you get free P&P for most things(think min price but if buying multiple parts, shouldn't be a prob)

below was always a popular cooler..used to be £36

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £43.99 (includes delivery: £0.00)

was just checking site to see price elsewhere for above..notice they have corsair rm750x and AMD 5600 on a promo for £270 for next 2 days..your evga unit is good psu though, just thought mention it

should also say, you wont have a problem with a 5600 with just about any board..only if you're going to drop something else in a few years down the line line a 5800X3D where looking at vrm more pertinent, but worth avoilding the ***p ones anyway
