Budget Raptor Lake Upgrade Query

Currently running an original 1st gen ryzen 1600x since 2017 and nvidia 1080. I've since upgraded the gfx to a rtx 3080 fe and an ultrawide monitor but am looking to upgrade the cpu to match and have my eye on the i5 13600k since it seems to have been well rated.

My question is tho I'm not sure what mobo and ram should I consider? I'm not fussed with ddr5 and want to get the best bang for buck so assuming I should be looking at a z690 ddr4 mobo?

Ideally I would like multiple pcie gen4 m.2 slots for upgrade at a later date but will use my current ssds for the time being to keep costs down.

Any advice appreciated and thanks in advance.

I can't remember which review I saw that said it, it might have been GN, but their board didn't boot without a bios update. I don't know how new the stock needs to be (or if this applies to all boards), might be worth asking OCUK before you buy a 600 board (especially if it doesn't have flashback).

I would've thought the most cost efficient upgrade in your case would be a bios update and then a straight swap to a 5600/5700x (or 5800x3d if you want the absolute best gaming chip on the am4 platform)

Fair comment but I've decided with upgrading I fancy a change from amd and the 13600k looked impressive so curious what people may suggest

The 13600k is a tad slower overall compared to the 5800x3d, and must use DDR5 ram for this comparison
The 5800x3d can be had for £420-440 (or £370 when on sale) which is a drop in upgrade
Vs 13600k + DDR5 6000 (6400) + z690 (z790) DDR5
= £380 + £250 (£300) + £170 (£270)
So basically paying double the price for less performance

Also, whilst am4 is indeed a dodo, raptor lake is also a dinosaur and the platform won't be supported after 13th gen either so can't really argue platform longevity.

I was considering the following for around £600:

i5-13600KF ~£350
Gigabyte B660M DS3H AX DDR4 - ~£130
Kingston FURY Renegade 32GB CL16 (2 x 16GB) 3600MHz DDR4 ~£124

I would have thought that my current mobo (Gigabyte x470 Gaming 7) would be too old now (5 years) to make use of a more modern CPU such as the 5800x3D? I think going DDR5 and Z790 is deffo overkill (pricewise) in light of this being the back end of the LGA 1700 lifespan hence why I was looking for more bang for buck alternatives such as previous gen 690/660 and DDR4. So even if I wanted to stick with AMD I'd still want to upgrade the mobo and DDR which would make it closer (I assume) to the same ballpark as the 13600?

Your Gigabyte x470 Gaming 7 will support the 5800X3D via a BIOS upgrade F63a. Save the cash and get a X3D on sale.

What Mr G said
The beauty of a well supported platform :)

13600k + DDR4 is slower than the 5800x3d
(It's a 13600k Vs 7600x comparison but the 5800x3d is also included)

So even if I wanted to stick with AMD I'd still want to upgrade the mobo and DDR which would make it closer (I assume) to the same ballpark as the 13600?
You don't have to! :)
BIOS update and then drop the chip right in! ;)

u dont match unlocked cpu with b660 mb. only z motherboards.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions - I've just realised that my mobo is actually a x370 (I've checked that it can also be BIOS updated), but wouldnt it be a bottleneck (being PCIe Gen3) for a RTX3080 and 5800x3d?

If your board can support it, X3D it!

Bloomin ada, I started this thread with something in mind (i5 13600) and now I've managed to be shown a cheaper suitable alternative! This is why I appreciate the OCUK members
