Hi all.

I use to build and fix pc’s up until about 2016.

6 years is an eternity for this industry so I’m looking for advice.

My son wants a pc, I don’t mind building one for him but I have less time these days so was wondering if I am better off buying a ready made pc.

I have a budget of around £1500.00 but I would also need a keyboard and mouse.

Your thoughts would be gratefully received.

What monitor will you be using ? If it is a 1080p monitor you can get away with building a PC for around £900 and it will be pretty darn good.

Certainly savings to be made by building yourself at moment. Here is the build I have sitting in basket that I link to people almost everyday.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £864.14 (includes delivery: £12.30)

You can take the above and put in 12400/12600 or even 12700 and will still be good. Update BIOS and 13th gen is also an option. If you go for a more powerful gpu then you may need a better PSU but unless you going for 3080 you will be ok with 650-750w.

There are a lot of decent options at the moment so no one build to rule them all.

He has a 42” 4k tv. I was hoping that would work. I know back in the day TV’s weren’t ideal but now with 4k upwards would it be ok?

What does he plan to use the PC for?

If games, what resolution/refresh and do you need a monitor?
Hope to use hi Lg tv which is 4k. As for the games he has a ps5 but plays Roblox on my ancient pc. I would expect him to want to play a few ps5 games but for pc

It depends on the type of game he wants to play (esports is much easier, for example), but native 4K gaming in current games is still very expensive. AMD suggest a RX 6800 and NVIDIA: RTX 3080. You can do it with something like a 3060 Ti or RX 6700, using DLSS or FSR for upscaling, but the lifetime of being able to do that is short (probably a few years).

Here you go , have updated with your needs in mind.

This is a very unbalanced PC , not many will be using a 12100f with a 3080 but if the TV limits you to 60hz then this would be the best option. You can always upgrade the cpu in couple of years and get more cores.

Black Friday is coming up so keep eyes open for good deals and if you can bag a second hand 3080/3080ti/3090 or 6800xt/6900xt for a good price you may be able to save some money.

Thanks guys.

Appreciate your time and help.

I will have a browse the OC
buing a 4k capable setup is just the wrong time..the new generation of cards are coming out but it's just the top end being launched at the mo...the 3080 is a cracking gpu (I have one) and stick a 2nd hand 12600k in @Haz123 and looking a lot more balanced...however, not sure buying up at the £800 mark that wise just yet..have you got time on your side or is this fairly pressing? Can your son make do with the xbox for a bit longer..with amd 7900XT coming out at $899, and 79000XTX at $999, will def put pressure on existing amd stock, and might cause a rethink on nvidia pricing for 4080 12gb card(or renamed 4070 or whatever they going to call it), though no idea when they going to launch it as pulled the lauch(they were going to launch it as a 4080 12gb along with 4080 16gb, but got found out using a diff gpu so not the same card, so pulled launch to rebadge it something else..funnily enough, 4070 would work but then they'll prob have to rename those too)

That case is only big enough for ITX motherboards, but that's a mini-ATX board, so could go for a case like this:
(roomy, good airflow, reasonably priced)

Or a normal mid-tower and there will just be some extra room at the bottom of the motherboard.
