2012 BMW X3 2.0d X-DRIVE M-SPORT 8-SPEED AUTO 181 BHP

Just been looking at this X-Trail on AT, only 19,000 miles but the steering wheel has quite a bit of wear on it at the top. Possibly clocked?

Good god man, seek help! Not even people who own a £17,000 1.6 diesel Nissan X-Trail want a £17,000 1.6 diesel Nissan X-Trail.

I truly, truly get that not everyone wants a fast/posh/exciting car - but seriously, why are you even looking at trash like this? It'll have cheap plastics all over it, it'll have a satnav system that wouldn't look out of place 20 years ago and it'll be slow as ****, to the point where a Ford KA wouldn't be much slower.

With or without your recent fortunate circumstances, just listen to the advice and go for a lease of a nice car. It doesn't have to be big, or fast, or posh, but it'll be newish so will have a bullet proof warranty, it'll be modern and it'll likely have a little bit of decent tech/comfort inside to make driving A to B a nicer experience.

I went to look at the X-Trail today, while the steering wheel was indeed fine and it was just dirt on it in the photo. However the rest of the car looks like it's been well abused for 19,000 miles, door shuts all scratched up, loads of marks on the back seats etc.

Also went to look at V6 Audi S4 today, again, looks good in the photos but covered in marks and scratches.

Now we're talking Lee

Just grab something fun, and bin after a bit, then try something else. You aren't buying for the rest of your life!

It seems like you’re “Lee”ning towards a 4x4-type car.

If that’s the case, what about something wacky:

RSQ3
Tiguan R
Cupra Ateca (Curpa Leon Estate also a good shout)
SQ5

You’ve got 10k a month, right? Save 30k and you’ll get a nice car, for sure.

Which cars DO you like atm?

I’d be avoiding anything like an xtrail - you can do better for the money.

Why is everyone suggesting powerful cars?

What would an RSQ3 do that a 2.0TFSI won't?

If you've won 10k a month for 30 years, why not?

Lee, for the first time in his life, it sounds like, is able to not go for baseline budget, nor "I can barely afford an Audi" - he can easily afford to spend a little bit extra on something which is going to make him smile, without it costing the earth.

It's important to have balance - have a bit of fun without splurging out on an M5.

Evidently isn't a car geek though. The extra performance would be wasted.

Because if he'd prefer 'nice' rather than 'fast' then he'd be better dropping £30k on a nicely specced Q5 2.0TSI say, with a load of options on it rather than an RSQ3 which seems to hold about £10k of it's value in the fact it has the 2.5TSFI engine.

You're absolutely right - performance alone won't do anything.

If he's going to get anything, it'll need to be emotionally engaging too - speed AND sound.

So the RSQ3 would stay on the list for me, with a lovely 5 cylinder engine. SQ5 has the EA839 V6 if you get the 2018 model - fantastic engine.

I'd probably go the RSQ3 over the SQ5 though.

He can afford to do both, no?

It might be a 5K difference - that's nothing.

Personally, if you're going for a nice car, I'd go BMW over Audi - in my experience, interior build quality on BMWs is much better.
