What's your upgrade target?

Out of curiosity I was looking at what I would need to get to see a decent increase at 1440p with my 3060Ti. It appears that I need to go to a 6950XT or better for it to be worthwhile, approximately 50% improvement.

What is your target and what card would you have to upgrade to to see that uplift over your current one?

I decided at current pricing there was nothing worth the extra outlay right now.

Up until last month I was still rocking a 1080 Ti.
For a decent uplift I was looking at getting the 3080 for a 80-90% uplift.

Then the 4090 came round and wrecked everything

As a former 3080 FE owner, gaming at 4K, the only card that I'd even consider a worthwhile upgrade over it, is a 4090.

..but I have no interest in actually buying one because of the appalling state of PC gaming ATM.

Everything below the 4090 (from Nvidia) is an opportunistic, overpriced rip-off cash grab for the performance increase to cost increase ratio they offer.

Other than that, if I still had a 3080, I'd be sitting this generation out and waiting for the 5080 in a couple of years, at least then the price increases, which we are no doubt stuck with henceforth, will reflect the performance uplift over a 3080.

Just using the iGPU on my 9900K for basic web & media use & a few hours a week of 2D retro gaming (via emulation).

Sold my 3080 FE a couple months ago and honestly, I haven't really missed it one bit, so little use was it getting for gaming, I just didn't see the point in keeping it.

Until something in PC gaming comes along to get me excited again (i.e NOT console ports), like CP 2077 did (Which is why I got the 3080), I don't see the point in rushing to replace my 3080.

3080 is a good sweet spot, I would buy one myself if they were available at RPP

At 1440, the forum deal on the 6900xt is probably your best bet at the moment, but it depends on what budget you have given yourself. Nothing wrong with a 3060ti, so I'd probably be looking at a fair step up to make it worthwhile... Which comes at a steep cost these days unfortunately.

You dont feel fps.
You feel latency.
5 year old vega56 still push 165fps in 1440p for me so I dont know when I be able to replace it for any meaningful difference.
So as long the fps stays high and same any upgrade is likely to be a wash.
If you want a perciveable difference with games you be hard pressed to notice any difference even when its 100 fps more.
Unless there is a delay with current set up your better off waiting for a new generation or two.
In my case, a mid range rdna3 card next year be the sweetspot for an upgrade but also likely to not really make a difference when playing.
and besides, sometimes you may need to change the cpu or even buy a new psu due to new tech has different requirements.

still soo tempted to opt for the 6900 xt my biggest concern is with black friday coming in just over a week whether prices are going to drop further as part of a drive to clear the remaining stock before the 7000 series is out

I dont think it will especially for the 6900xt OCUK have I bet this will be the lowest price. I`m not expecting the 7xxx to be in great numbers so if thats the case the 6xxx wont drop much, especially as AMD are only launching the top two tiers first.

only other thing that has me concerned is will the 7000 series offer 2x boost for what is essentially double the price of the 6900 xt too its annoying they havent given really any big comparisons with the 6900xt yet i think

My target is a 40% - 50% improvement for £299 which is the MSRP of my 6600. Until that happens I consider myself future proof.

I'm not bending over for anyone's profit margin. It's their job to bend over for me with attractive deals like free games.

I was just talking about this with my step-son and it's a weird time to be buying new - he was still using a GTX 1080 which he's now swapped for my 3060 Ti (it was overkill for my 2nd PC) - it's gotten him a 50% uplift plus DLSS and RT but it's more of a 1440p card and he's looking to do some 4k gaming.

The prices are still ridiculous - you'd think by now the 30-series would be dipping below MSRP but there's not a single AIB across the whole range that sells for less than FE prices - it seems Jensen was serious about not losing money on the 30-series inventory.

Customers that are happy buying AMD have it quite a bit better but if you specifically want a new nvidia card you're being bent over a barrel right now.

As I game in VR then looks like a 4090. For the eye candy.

Previously ran 1080ti From launch. Then bagged a 3090 just after launch... but feeling the pull of a 4090 now.

I try for twice the performance before upgrading.
Cost is also a factor. I tend to keep cpus for 5-8 years and gpus for about three, then use them in another PC for something.

I'm good until I can double the performance of my 3060ti for a reasonable price, I'm not paying more than £300-400 and even then I'm hesitant.

That said I'm more than happy with my current level of performance for the titles I play, I don't see myself changing GPU again for another 3-4 years.

Yes I can see there being some really good buys, just a matter of timing it right.

If you can afford it and get plenty of use out of it why not. PC gaming isn't my main hobby so I can't justify it but if it was I'd probably do the same.

Pretty much my thinking, if price to performance doesn't improve I won't be buying. I see no point in paying double for double the performance for my uses.

GPU prices will be virtually impervious to Black Friday (which has been proven as a complete joke/marketing ploy for the past 20 years, in any case -- hilarious people still fall for this). You may see a very slight drop in 6xxx series cards in the lead up to the 7xxx series, but don't expect much. A 6900 XT for £625 is about as low as it will go since the 7900 XT will cost around £1000 and around 40% faster (the price/performanced ratio is staying the same this generation, if not inverting).
