Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

No doubt everyone has heard the story this week about the little boy who died because of mould.

Anyway obviously due to the cost of energy prices and the fact it has not been too cold this autumn, I have not put the heating on yet. I opened the bedroom curtains this morning and was shocked to see black mould had grown all over the window sill, wall around the window and even on the glass ! There is none anywhere else in the house, just the bedroom.

I'm not sure what to do other than get the bleach out
black mould is a female dog to get rid of and as I said in an other post a lot will have issues with it if they can't heat their homes and try to block up vents this winter. it's a tragedy for that poor little lad but I can't believe they let it get that bad. I know the property people are getting the blame but the Tenents have a responsibility too

Have they actually published any photos of this flat? You do see some horrors (I remember someone here years ago posted photos of their place with mushrooms growing out the skirting boards and the like  ).

wow that is bad..... it does sound like the entire building is not fit for purpose. I genuinely do not know how that happens. my wife's flat had a very minor black mould issue (came about because the lodgers disconnected the heating and blocked vents). we put it right twice and the council were on to us threatening us... and whilst you only have my word for it it was less than a fraction as bad as that in the corners of 2 rooms.

(we found out about the disconnected heaters and blocked vents and asked them to leave, not had any issues since)
but my point is, Cambridge council were on us like flies on pooh.

You have to wonder how it got that bad, house construction is one thing, but I'd be getting the bleach out long before it became that.

Yeah, absolutely. I'd be hosing that wall down with bleach.

Sorry state of affairs really.
Need heating on to stop it. Can't afford heating.
Many buildings seem stuck with it.
So cold and can't afford heating so don't ventilate properly.

Even a small amount of mold makes me feel ill from sight of it. Only lived in one place with mold. And it was only really when moved a wardrobe found it.

ok that's a lot more damming - so did the coroner not know other flats in the same block had issues .. and building should be condemed.

The coroner issued a Regulation 28 report here. It's fairly brief, and gives the facts of this case, and recommendations for action to prevent future deaths of this sort.

This one lists the minister for housing (Gove) and Secretary for health (Barclay) who have a fixed time to respond. No recommendation is made to the specific housing association, possibly as Gove may have power to direct/ make legislation to address this.

Regulation 28 reports are routinely issued where the Coroner believes a body should take action to prevent further, similar, deaths in future.

BBC just had a tweet up about someone who turned the trip switch off when they took the dog for a walk then proceeded to talk about other ideas for saving money such as living in one room and families moving in together, they really need to stop normalising this and instead need to focus 100% on calling it out , everyday, until things change.

I am not home till Friday this week so I have turned off everything at switchboard apart from Fridge/pond left running. Might only save 1kWh for the week compared to leaving them on with other things on standby however over a year etc it will all start to add up. End of day why have things on if you are not there tbh?

Saving 1kWh a week, giving 52kWh in a year equates to £17.68 saving. A year. Is it really worth it?

Depends how much your bill is to start with. Mine is that low saving because I am already only using on average 2.7kWh a day over a 7 day period (5 days out (2kWh per day, 2 days WFH 4.5kWh). Those whom leave more on standby plugged in and such may well see more of a return.

But that is a months worth of daily charges saved with that. Or its £1.48 of each months bill. Come April it would be £21.20 a year. Those whom have a much higher base (bearing mine is only 70watt) could be saving 2kWh a week and so that suddenly is £42.40 a year come April. It all might not be huge but it is a saving and also generally less energy used which is better for everyone.
