Water Meter Reading

Hi all,

Just trying to read my water meter. In a flat on my own and they are estimating £30 per month for water. I hardly use any really, shower in the morning and dishwasher once a week are the main ones. So just looking to optimize all my bills. Already got electricity down from £113 to £71 so just seeing if I can improve on the water rates.

This is the correct meter as the serial matches, I had to clean all the crap off it but its very hard to read it properly, I had to have both hands in the whole holding phone with the flash on to be able to get this. Its just glare otherwise I might need to try again at a different time of day. The estimate they have given is 745.

From this picture I can not make out the second digit at all, The only one I can read is the first 7 and looks like the last digit has just gone past 0?

Anyone able to decipher it haha.

EDIT** Looking again with fresh eyes I think its actually 740?

That looks a lot like 740 to me.

Does your water bill include waste water charges? Where I live, that is linked to your water meter as well, and costs twice as much as the fresh water.

This. Our waste water charges are painfully expensive. Ours is about £30 a month and any changes you make only save a couple of pound on that. Even our weekend home is about £15 a month due to the waste charge on top.

Yeah looking at that I am only paying £20 for water so I doubt me giving reading will make much difference then. Oh well, I shall reading it for a few months just as a test now I have cleaned it, only take 5 mins.

Ah nice to know thanks. Ive changed the submission to 739 you might have saved me a couple of pennies hahah

Why are they estimating? I'm in a flat on a meter and someone comes and reads mine at least I assume they do I get an actual reading on teh bill and I don't have to ask for it helps its in the street under a liftable cover I guess but £30 pcm is ridiculous unless the washing machine is going non stop. The annoying thing is the standing charge bill is larger than the water itself now theres only so much you can do to cut utility bills they still want their pound of flesh whatever you do

I don't think we will reach this looking at the level now but its done nothing but rain for ages............
pay £17 a month but its a privately owned road (well hill more than road cant really call it a road ) so we pay no waste water
edit /we have a cess pit somewhere near the camel trail but only throw the odd tenner into a yearly fund

Somehow our combined in & out bill is only £6 per month for 2 of us, both showering daily & running the dishwash every other day! We thought that the read of the meter must be wrong but it matched their reading.
 
My water meter is in a cluster of 10 water meters. No idea which is mine as Severn Trent refuse to tell me which one. I know the number but not going to open the hatches to up to 10 of them, scoop out the water (that happened to the water meter at a previous property) to read the figures,

Currently paying ST about £15.70 a month.

The washing machine is twice a week at most. It does say they read it once a year I think on the site but the bills I've had so far have been estimates so wanted to read myself. How much is your water bill if you don't mind, I know areas differ just curious!

Your meter is running slow and they will eventually get around to replace it with a new meter that can be read remotely.
 
While you are doing a read also worth checking for cross connection (especially with flats) just run your mains tap and that middle wheel will spin up. You would be amazed by how many flat owners are paying for each others water (worked 17 years on the network and saw it many times)
