RX 6700 XT - do they run hot? Recommended settings for MSI Afterburner?

My system: i7 12700kf - 360mm AIO liquid cooler, 64GB DDR4, etc.. my case is an open frame Thermaltake Core P3 TG. My system is not overclocked. It does not overheat. I've got temps displayed on my Stream Deck.

Last night I picked up an XFX Speedster SWFT309 RX 6700XT 12GB. I run it on dual 32" 1440p monitors @ 165hz. I had to install it with the PCIe riser because it didn't fit due to the larger radiator. Unfortunately I am stuck with the PCIe riser cable that came with the case, which is only 3.0. I can't afford a 4.0 right now.

I encoded some video as a test in Premiere, and I played CSGO. Seemed to work fine.

I come home tonight and there's stuttering in CSGO. I didn't think to check temps while I was in game, once I got out I noticed it's running hot.

I have MSI Afterburner. What are some settings I should do in there to help the temps out?

I did adjust the fan curve.. right now it's at 76% fanspeed and 33 degrees celcius.

What kind of other settings should I try?

Can I suggest you get the overlay going and see what sort of temps you get when running games. Once we get an idea of the temps, then we can see about undervolting. As a sledgehammer. It might be worth putting a refresh lock in the AMD drivers so you dont go over your maximum refresh which looks like 165fps.

I don't need an overlay I can see the temps.. they're on my Stream Deck all the time. I just didn't think to check them earlier when I was experiencing stuttering. I just wanted to play and finish the game.

Anyway, I started another game. The highest it went to was 50c. I've since adjusted the fans.. they're running at 100% and pushes my temps as low as 41c or so, but she'll go back up.

What makes you certain it was the graphics card overheating? What kind of temps were they?

Those are not hot temps for a graphics card.

Yeah, this is my fault.. this darn celcius and fahrenheit got me messed up. I was Googling safe temps for a 6700 XT and I thought it said 110f.. it was 110c. My highest was 50c. I think my CPU highest was 50c at one point as well. They both run idle (well I'm watching a tv show right now) at around 33c-34c. My hard drives run between 28c-31c.

They don't get hot, at least my sapphire cars doesn't.

Mine gets to about 65-70c with fans barely spinning and is perfectly quiet.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll keep playing like I do once or twice a night and see how she behaves. Only real issue I've had with the system as everything is brand new (except power supply). I had to upgrade the video card because Adobe Premiere wasn't working with it (RX 480 not supported).

Which driver version are you using ? 50c is not hot its really good.

Today I'm running at 25c and I'm playing CSGO. I have the bedroom window open, so it's bringing in some cold air, but the room isn't cold.. it's comfortable in here.

Anyway, I am running whatever the latest drivers are on AMD's website.

CSGO was stuttering one day when my temps were 47-50c. That's what originally prompted me to come here and investigate.

I installed card and everything ran fine.. including CSGO. The next day I came home from work to play CSGO and for some reason it was stuttering every few seconds. It wasn't until the end of the match I looked over at the GPU/CPU temp.

Anyway, I still am going to get a 3D printed 120/140mm bracket or two and attach them to the case also.

It could have been something silly like a big windows update downloading on your SSD.

Could have been, but something else not Windows update. I have it "paused" from being updated until Dec 7, 2022. 35 days.

Anyway, it's running fine again. I played 2 or 3 games.

Thats fine but we keep telling you there is nothing wrong with those temperatures yet you are going to add more cooling. LOL

Did you check for CPU spikes at the time ? Did you check the RAM usage ? Its not necessarily the GPU.

Some people dream of those low temperatures!

Those temps are beyond fine, they're very good. I'd only start thinking about changing things if they reached or exceeded 75-85°c under load. Personally I'd lower the fan curve with the temperatures you're getting, make the card quieter.

Alright, I'll test things out.. right now I'm basically sitting idle.. typing an email.. fans are 20% and GPU temp 32-33 celcius. I'll start a game shortly and see.

What you need is a 5800X3D

Your temps seem almost too low, are you sure nothing is holding your GPU back?

That's only 8 core, though.. if I move to a new system it'll be more cores.

Right now, I can't go AMD for the processor.. I'm dedicated to keeping this system awhile. I can only go so high as a 11900 processor currently and I'm already at a 11700. Since I'm on a Z590 it'll never go up to 13th gen.

There is ONE factor that may get me to upgade.. I did not know this before I bought the motherboard:

"*CPU performance may be limited due to power phase design."

I'll have to buy 3DMark and run a test, but b it appears my CPU is going up to 4.8 or 5ghz.. so maybe it's alright.
