London ULEZ expansion plan to go ahead

Politically brave, sucks for those who live in London with a non-compliant vehicle and everyone else doesn’t care.

Living in London would make my life so much easier and more convenient. The main reason I would never live in London is the air quality. I can literally taste how dirty is compared to home on arrival.

Just forcing people off the roads. It’s the grand plan.

They should exempt people who live within the expanded zone. £12 just to pop to the supermarket through your local roads is scandalous

It wont bother us, one we dont live in London anyway (been there done that) and both our cars are ULEZ compliant anyway, so if we go visit my folks etc makes no difference. I think its a good thing to be honest.

Oddly, my motorcycle isnt ULEZ compliant, go figure.......

looks like a cash grab, income already 112M/8months, & transport for london budget < 2Bn

Given availibility/price of new cars and the 2nd hand values (albeit turning now) people will be less able to replace non-compliant cars, despite scrappage.

The data shows that since the beginning of November 2021 until June 2022 – a period of eight months – an average of 1.9m journeys were made into the zone every month by vehicles not conforming to either Euro 6 diesel standards or Euro 4 petrol standards, resulting in £112.5m worth of revenue from those vehicles required to pay.**

It'll be very unpopular but they've got to try and do something. I was born and raised in London but I wouldn't move back there, the pollution is dramatically worse than anywhere else in the UK and it shows. You can see the pollution-related changes as you drive into/out of London it is so stark.

If you stand on the vista point in Greenwich park and look towards the city, it is always hazy because of the sheer amount of crap in the air.

I doubt he is toast. Even if he is, the ULEZ isn’t going anywhere. I can’t see a conservative candidate getting in any time soon based on current polling, nor would they get rid of it.

A ULEZ compliant car doesn’t have to be particularly new, petrol can be EURO 4 which is quite old at this point.

The biggest issue is actually vans where a ULEZ compliant one needs to be EURO6 as they are all diesel. Proper taxis are probably another issue, there are still a lot of old black cabs on the roads but I understand there is support in place for both of these.

True, I lived in London for a few years when younger, now I can actually taste the pollution every time I go there. I certainly would never live there agin.

Yikes, £12.50 to drive my big old Merc! Only gets used maybe once a month for long journeys so not a massive deal, hopefully as I'm on a private road I can "run it" to keep the battery alive although I appreciate that's not in the spirit of things.

Thank god I bought that 1.2 Polo!

Same when you blow your nose, literally a different colour comes out after a day in London.

I wonder what proportion of cars of ULEZ compliant these days, ours from 2016 is and ULEZ compliance wasn't a criteria I was looking for (although I didn't want another diesel).

I mean, I just checked and my mums 18 year old new style mini and my 10 year old GT86 are compliant, surprisingly, so it must be a pretty low bar to get a compliant car these days.

When I was a kid it was interesting that though the sky looked kind of blue when visiting London if you took a photo with cameras of that era it would come out a much more noticeable yellow/blue in the photo - which you didn't get most other places.

I remember the days as well of working in London where by the end of the day your collar and cuffs, etc. would be marked with black smudges on the edges and there'd be black stuff in your saliva/snot. Didn't happen every day but there were days where it happened.

The quality of life is just trash unless you are a millionaire. I have no idea why anyone would want to live there and I visit most days!

From the A13 going in you can barely see the Shard, HSBC etc as it is constantly in fog. A couple of accidents and the whole place comes grinding to a halt.

Hopefully some bargains to be had for those who don't live in London.

Come on it’s not trash. You haven’t lived it but I understand the cynicism. In my experience most people who hate London have never lived inside the M25. I wasn’t born here either.

My father was born and bred Tottenham before it turned to trash. People who defend London haven't seen the rest of the country either. London isn't bad if you can afford it but you need to be top 1% to enjoy it. The rest of the country is far more accessible and cleaner.

Just to get back on topic. It would be 100% better to encourage people to keep their old cars instead of forcing everyone to buy new cars but then we need to get people spending all their hoarded cash during a recession. The emissions impact of people just chucking away perfectly useable cars and replacing them with new must surely be worse.

I have, the same rules apply. You can either afford a good life or you can’t. Some places have more opportunities however.

Oh and that’s the broadest brush statement I’ve heard all day!

The same rules do not apply. Apart from inner city Birmingham you do not have kids dying from poor quality air anywhere else in the country.
