PC loses internet connection?

So just turned on PC and internet is off and the network icon is the globe icon indication no internet. Just ran ipconfig/all and the following is listed:

IPv4 Address 192.168.x.x(preffered)

I use Sky Router.

If I run ipconfig/renew the details are the same as above for IPv4 address.

When I ran ipconfig/renew after enabling the internet via network adapter the IPv4 is different. Still 192.168 but next number is a 0 not a 1 as above. No idea what any of this means by the way.

That zero/one is why you're off the network.

The IP address is like your house address; The first three digits is a very big georgraphical area - like the UK (but 192 isn't the UK just to be clear), then the next three digits could be the city and the next three is the street and lastly it's the house number. So if the zero changes to a one the computer has the same house number but in different street and there is another set of four numbers (the subnet) that tells your PC and your router where it can send network traffic to. IT looks something like 255.255.255.0 and that set of numbers tells your system it can only see other houses/computers in the same street so if you change the 1 to a 0 then you can no longer see the other houses/computers in your street/network so it looks like it drops off the network.

The most likely cause is you have 2 devices on your network that are acting as DHCP servers and one is giving out IP addresses on the 192.168.0.x network and the other is giving them out on the 192.168.1.x and at some point in youir browsing session your PC asks for a new IP address and the wrong server gives it one.

So what else do you have plugged into your network?

My Sky router is connected to the BT phone line in the bottom room. It only has 2 ports on the back so I have a TP-AC2100 wireless MU-MMO modem connected to one of its ports which itself is on the middle floor connected by 30 metres of cable to give me good connection for the above two floors as connection from the sky router for the two floors above is garbage. The other port on the Sky router is connected to a TP link TL-SG1055, 5 Port Ethernet splitter as I connect the TV and PC to this which are on the bottom floor. Although, I have tested the PC plugged directly into the Sky router and the problem still happens. I used to have Virgin Media at an old house which had 4 ports. Sky router tight gits only has two so needed the splitter. Other than this just wireless devices like phones and iPads.

What mode is the TP-Link Archer AC2100 in? Ideally it needs to be in wireless access point mode or something similar, but looking at the manual it doesn't offer this. Have you made sure the DHCP server on it is off so it doesn't conflict with Sky's router?

EDIT: It can be found via Advanced -> Network -> LAN Settings -> IPv4. Seems to explain why IPv6 is unaffected since it can't serve IPv6 addresses.

If I remember right, some of the older routers split their ethernet and wifi up via the subnet. 0 being given to ethernet and 1 being given to the wifi. Do you happen to have a wifi connection on your computer as well?

No Wi-Fi on PC. I am ignorant of all things like this. So let me ask a question regarding DHCP. My pc has been connected directly to the Sky Router and this still happens. Why would the Tp Link AC2100 matter? This is upstairs to give me coverage in the above 2 floors. Also, I have had Sky for over 18 months and this never happened till maybe this year.

Because it's still on the same network. Doesn't matter where in the chain it's connected, if it's faster than the Sky hub in giving the PC an IP then the PC will end up with the wrong IP address. Ideally you want only 1 DHCP server running on a network anyway to avoid issues like this.

Got it. Thanks.

So another way to see if this is the issue would be to turn off the TP link router and see if it still does this just connected to the Sky router?

Try setting the speed of your NIC to a fixed value, it's probably on auto so try it at 1 Gbps full duplex, then try 100 Mbps full duplex and see if that helps any.

Windows > Device manager > Network adapters > NIC properties > Advanced > Speed & Duplex

This is often a source of problems with certain cables, I have a cable here which would sometimes crap out when set to auto negotiation but worked fine when set to fixed. The really bizarre part is I just installed a new system with an Intel 226-V NIC which would lose network connection every minute on a good cable (was working perfectly with the last system) which I only resolved by swapping to a known bad cable. The cherry on top? This morning when starting the machine, no network connection at all until I change the NIC speed...

So this seems to be resolved. It has been 10 days since I turned DHCP off on the TP link router and just left the Sky router given DHCP. No issues anymore. Strange why for 8 months I had no issues then it started all of a sudden.

Good to hear that. I have the same issue with my tv. Every time i start it , it shows the mistake "not connected to the internet' couple times in a row. It connects after some time but still it is annoying. After reading these optimum reviews i start to think that might me provider issue. Do you guys agree on that one? What else can be the problem then? It is nothing critical of course, but pretty annoying.
